Yeah, id assume you'd want some kind of filter in there to replace the one you removed. Otherwise you're gonna get junk in your engine.

The charcoal filter is an EXTRA filter inside the airbox designed to prevent, upon shutdown, the fumes of unburnt fuel from deep within the engine from escaping into the atmosphere and stifling the creativity of baby owls. Your regular airfilter will still be present on its removal. That said, it is a total waste of time and does nothing.

Hey again Ahmad11! judging from your last post I feel you have the wrong idea about the "charcoal filter delete". The charcoal filter is a SEPARATE filter from the stock bmw paper filter thats ALSO in the air-intake-box. The charcoal filter is built into the airbox, and removal is a tedious process requiring a knife and 40 grit sandpaper. There is a DIY of this posted in the DIY index. You CAN STILL DELETE THE CHARCOAL FILTER without replacing the stock bmw paper filter, however most people switch out the stock filter with either a K&N or AFE drop in filter as its one of those, "since its already open, why not?" kind of things.
I recommend doing the charcoal filter delete but as combatninja brought up.. you have to be very careful because something could go very badly.. which I'm just going to tell you. When doing the entire charcoal filter delete process there is something called a MAF Sensor that is attached to the airbox, you have to CAREFULLY remove that before you start cutting into the charcoal filter etc, as getting the MAF sensor dirty OR breaking it will bring on the smackdown. Hope this helps! _________________ *EDIT* I'm feeling very helpful today, lol. The cheapest I've found to purchase the K&N is here.. http://www.amazon.com/33-2332-Replac.../dp/B000E5W9PA In addition to getting that I'd also get this CRC MAF Cleaner.. http://www.amazon.com/CRC-05110-Mass.../dp/B000J19XSA what you do with this, is after you remove the MAF Sensor from the airbox, set your MAF on the floor and spray it with this cleaner, I sprayed about 2 separate times (spray, wait to completely dry, spray again, wait again to completely dry, and then put back into airbox when you're reassembling everything. Second of all, you never have to replace the K&N, so have fun wasting more money on paper filters.

It definitely is different. Slight, but still notice able. That silencer is such a joke. Thank god my E46 didn't have one.

If you look at the diagram in post #5, it's #10, "rubber boot." The silencer is that peice under it. I just cut it off with a hand saw and used one of those rubber plugs with the screw on it to expand it, to plug the hole. |

When deleting the charcoal filter and cleaning the MAF is it possible to get a SES light on the dash? My SES light came on this morning driving into work.

The combination of all 3 gave a nice subtle growl to my car though. Enough so my sister noticed and she knows nothing/has no interest in cars. |

K&N + charcoal in my opinion is simply for sound. don't expect any gains from this. Personally I think it sounds great 4.5k and up. but other than that, maybe a slight increase in throttle response. I recorded this with my iphone. You can be the judge as to any sound differences.
The only thing i notice is that there is a slighter deeper growl at each start and as the car begins to warm up, other than that; your ears will adapt and you won't notice anything.
