Help me choose my sub

As some of you are aware i did an install in my last car and then bought a new car. I should be able to transfer everything over, apart from the sub. I think because my car has split folding seats, the boot isn't as sealed so IB can't be done?

So i guess a sub in a box is my only option?

I have a choice of a 10w7 or a 12w6. Either will be powered by my DLS (500W @ 4ohm and 870W @ 2ohm) So the w6 would get anywhere up to 870w and the w7 would get roughly 6-700w.

I have a 10" diamond dial voice coil rated at 400w rms and that sounds great and cuts through the steel wall of the boot. The 12" version is rated to 600wrms.

Sq is very clean and gives very tight smooth bass in sealed enclosure

Sounds like what i'm after, but I want to stick with the above two recommendations as i have been offered a swap for my existing Fi sub.

Honestly, your ears are probably spoiled now, so a box in the trunk will probably be a disappointment no matter what you do! Look at how TMR did his IB setup you could do something similar. Other than that, the 10w6 corner loaded would probably be your best option.

I know what you mean, it won't sound the same

I don't think i'd do what TMR did. Now i have the split folding seats, i do like the practicality, and i will be getting married in a few weeks so should come in handy!

I'm thinking as a compromise, perhaps selling my Jehnerts and Fi sub, and just getting some subs for the underseats like Earthquakes or the Gladen woofer. I don't really want a box as it will probably just give me a load of rattle I know this won't be the best outcome as i'll have a massive mid bass hole, and it won't be as good as having a sub.

What would be your advice if i can't get a sub in?

Kai, just to throw a spanner in to the works, what would a 12w6 in a pro wedge box be like?

The corner enclosure will give you no rattle. Everything else probably will! I tried a 12W7 in a pro-wedge box and I returned it the next day. Lots of rattles and that sub just does not sound good to me, at least not in that type of set-up. The only adjective I can give you to describe the sound is "loose". I also had a 10W7 in my Honda years back and I had a similar experience with it, although I kept it much longer. The W6 was designed for SQ and works in small enclosures. The W7 is more geared towards SPL and requires larger enclosures. I am fairly certain that a W7 would sound great in an IB install, but I would never use it in a sealed or ported enclosure.

Have you thought about an IB install through the rear deck like Makkan did?

I have 2 ten inch p3 rockford fosgate sub woofers in a ported box with a p500.2 rockford amp. When you have the rear seats down it literally sounds like a club in the car its awesome.. Really brings out the logic 7 surrond

Yes, if you fold the seats down you eliminate most of the issues associated with having a well-sealed trunk. For a daily driver though, this is not very practical.

BTW Mob, congrats!

Word of advice: whatever you plan on doing with the car, do it now! It'll be so much more difficult later on, after the new CFO takes over! You'll either have a very limited budget and have to justify every penny, or you'll have to learn the fine art of stealth installing, which could involve shipping new toy purchases to a friends house or you office, and doing turbo install sessions while the wife is at the mall!

Thanks

Haha yeah that's why i bought the 335 when i did! Will be a bit harder after lol.

I want to keep the practicality so i think a corner enclosure with something like a W6 is the way to go. Don't really want to be driving with the seats down. But at the moment my ideas are all over the place and i really can't decide.

Whats the perfect corner enclosure for a W6?

A descent installer should be able to make you a corner enclosure out of fibreglass. I don't know of a uk supplier. Once in you won't notice.

I think this is your best bet.

You are welcome to have a listen to my set up if it helps you.

Cheers. I've looked into making the enclosure myself previously. Seems like good fun, but could be a PITA!

Think for now i'm just going to get the Morel/Jehnerts in and after i come back from my break i'll get cracking!

I just installed the brand new JL 10W6 (D4) combined with the XD 600.1. It's in a very small sealed enclosure (0.6 cu ft) and while I don't have the benefit of a ski pass or folding seats, with a bit of tuning (24db slope @ 63hz w/phase reversed) it sounds fantastic.

New 10W6v3-D4

I think a custom corner enclosure would be even better than what I've got right now, but since I was expecting a muffled, sorry, uphill battle I'm pretty damn pleased with the result right now. I've actually got the remote knob attenuating the input volume pretty considerably and it's right on the edge of too much which I like

Something like the zenclosures box would be nice but with the subs facing the other direction sealed off. From the trunk it would look stock and you'd still have most of your trunk with no rattles. If you want more bass fold down the ski pass or the seats. IMO forward facing subs are more efficient than corner loading if done right.

Hmmm that's exactly how i had it on before, i just thought because i had folding seats, it wouldn't be 100% sealed and therefore comprimised...

So i can actually use an IB setup with split folding seats and it would sound like it should? If so then i'll do that!!

I think the baffle may not be as good as with the fixed seats. By this I mean the hinged seatback may have some spring to it, due to the locking mechanism, and there may be more air leaks. But in the end it only takes some screws and a power drill to find out for sure!

One thing you would definitely have to sacrifice though is the split capability of the rear bench.

no i just have my IB mount so tight that it takes a good slam to get the mechanism to lock :P and it doesnt budge from there, also i didnt screw into the other seat so i retained my split seat capabilities. I think it sounds wonderful. i dont like to knock my ears off with bass anymore but the 8s just werent doing it so this works perfect.
