Clutch judder - a fix?

No, there is a software update that increases the revs at idle to try and help it, but a new clutch assembly is the proper fix, the new clutch has a second plate on it to help the balancing, which is what causes the judder.

The purely software 'fix' is old news. Wouldn't this be a different issue though? Doesn't the Alpina have different oily bits?

My car went into the dealers yesterday but the revised clutch still isnt available. Apparently its been approved for all cars apart from the E92 - which is still under testing

Literally "e92" only? Or all e90 models...??

Still trying to obtain further "official" information prior to booking mine in...

Any more info from rich or Guy on what was actually done would be a great help!

They mentioned that officially, its only approved for fitting on the 1 Series Diesels.

The 3 Series E90 and E91 have had them fitted but apparently no E92 has.

They all share the same engine and gearbox so don't see how it makes a difference but I guess that its good that they are testing on all models to ensure its a 100% fix.

They mentioned that the release of the updated clutch is dependant on your cars production code too.

I'd suggest speaking to Scott Walker at Sytner Sheffield but when I enquired on behalf of that Slovenian guy Scott played it very cagey and said something about all cars being individually assessed for their suitability.

Yes, the basic engine is the same, just fettled, and the clutch and gearbox are boggo 2litre diesel fayre.

I had an update and am told that the clutch replacement for E92's will now materialise in mid Jan.

There is a huge backlog though, so chances are replacements would follow after this. I'm told my car is somewhere near the top of the list and that the part will arrive straight to the dealer soon as its released

Interesting one this.
I've to pick mine up tomorrow morning.
It was in for seat wiring looms to be replaced for the second time (airbag light on twice this year) and I asked them to look at my clutch. They've done the software thing so we'll see how it goes. At least I can press them for this new part if software doesn't do the job.
I've a 318iA Edition as a loaner and it's a nice little runner, auto works well in sport mode! No clutch judder either ;-)

Interesting indeed. The symptoms the 1er chaps are describing are exactly what I experienced. The feedback after the work has been done was spot on too.

Got the car back yesterday. Software update only.
Have noticed the same activity on the economy meter as Rich, in traffic, coming to a standstill, the needle moves up above to 50mpg mark then returns to infinity.
Apart from that, no judder so far, but sometimes it will 'bog down' just after takeoff if I'm just cruising in traffic. If I do a spirited take off, it's fine.
Clutch bite seems a lot lower than before, it was almost at the top of the pedal, now it's about half way.
Dealer didn't divulge any more than the software update but when pressed gently said that they would change the clutch if it recurred. Also said that there was a new part due mid-Jan for my e92. This ties in with the info here.
Mentioned the forum chat on the clutch issue next and they did admit that they had experienced a high level of clutch issues on the 2.0d models across the range.

Interestingly, my mother has the same issue on her E92 320d and has been told by the dealer the same stuff re: getting the new part in Jan. sounds good as this clutch prob has been ruining her enjoyment of an otherwise great car!

Car is going in for service soon and warranty is in last 6 months so would be good to get this resolved.

In the first instance you'd need to get it booked in at your dealer. They will ask you to authorise a gearbox removal, as they will have to do this to measure the clutch and flywheel. Dependant on this, they should be able to authorise a replacement - I think now they will only fit the revised part as a matter of course.
