OIl Consumption
Just about to put the second litre of oil into the 335d in 5000 miles. Now when we picked the car up we were told it might use a little oil during running in and I know this consumption is within BMWs specification, but is anybody else experiencing this usage?
We've never had any other BMs that have had such a thirst for oil, the 120d hasn't used any in 4000 miles. By the time the service is due I will probably have put in six litres unless it slows down. Regards Chris

I've put 1 litre in my 335i so far and it went in at 6000 miles-ish. It has done just over 7k now.
I had a Z4 2.2i that used 1 litre every 2000 miles. But that car was bouncing off it's redline every day. So much fun.

over 15k i have put no more than 2 litres in. im a religious checker.... check every couple of days... its now again half way down the dip shit
i never let it get low.. and never over fill... when i come to top up again i will put no more than 100ml or 200ml at a time to raise it slightly overfilling is bad for the engine, maybe you have a leak? Carlos

I can only check mine when the engine has got up to temperature (335i). I've no dipstick just a computer display. Have put in about 1.5 litres in 15,000 miles. It uses a lot less oil than my previous two 525d's.

Just checked today and the level was a couple of milimetres below the max line - which is fine i think for 3200 miles.
I did however not give the car any easy run-in. I just drove it hard from day 1. I think I have read somewhere that this helps them bed-in better and thus burn less oil later in life.

What is more likely?
1. BMW included the correct information in the manual, which was kind of easy because they calibrated the dipstick and designed the entire oil system so that the correct reading was obtained from a warm engine (as is the case with the electric 'dip shit' in the petrol engined cars. 2. BMW included deliberately erroneous information in their manual and only Carlos Fandango has the 'god like' ability to discern the truth Hmmmn ... it's tricky ..... Carlos is sort of 'god-like' and BMW do after all tend to just 'make up' all the information they provide |

Just checked my 335i and its looking a little low (5500 miles).
What oil do you guys use and do you fill it yourselves or go to the dealers?

You diesel boys don't listen though .. it's almost as if you are obsessed with huge torque, superb fuel economy and low emissions to the point that you fail to see than an electronic dipstick is so much more important. |
