I drove a 2007 N54 for three years. I know quite well how well that engine performs. I have driven both and owned both, so I have a direct means of comparison through experience. Do you?? I didn't think so.

Likewise.
From my reading on various other threads/forums, my understanding is the fuel system on the N55 is now supplied by Bosch (the one on the N54 was from Siemens). Also, the turbo is now supplied by Borg Warner (where the two on the N54 were, I believe, from Garrett). I believe the short block is the only thing the two engines have in common. Perhaps someone with more insider knowledge can confirm or deny? I've only had my N55 powered 335 for a couple months, and I came from a 328 before that so I can't make a direct comparison, but so far I'm certainly very happy with the performance. Time will tell on the reliability side. |

Stock for stock, I think the n55 feels better than the n54. Just as responsive but with noticeably more power. Power delivery is also smoother which may be due to Valtronic. There is talk that the crankshaft isn't forged as it is in the n54. But it's not like crankshaft failures are common in the first place.
Our n55 is reponding well to tuning. Still too early to see if it matches the n54 in max tuned performance. Great engine though. Shiv |

this from the mouth of one of the advanced piggyback tuners --- Shiv, say it isnt so .. cuz the N54 has to be superior (but i do agree with you, btw) that being said, i still think the greatest potential in either platform has yet to be tapped -- waiting for my iS in the fall of '12, itll be me my New Years present |

Can't wait to see those N55's fully modded. It actually does have the same fuel pump as the n54.

It's true, but the N55 HPFP operates at a lower pressure. I don't think the lower pressure saves the HPFP, but it can stay broken for longer without anyone noticing it

So is their a fix for this? What do I go to the stealership and say? "Hi my car sounds like a diesel, might be the waste gate..."

Why doesn't someone just make some god damned manifolds for aftermarket turbos and wastegates for these fucking cars already!?!?!?! They don't even have to be big turbos....just ones that will work a little better for a little longer

Mine has 400 miles on it now and has rattled when cold from day 1. It sounds like mine is coming from the rear of the car. I suspected the exhaust valve. Once warm I haven't heard it rattle.
