My E90 has Whoosh & Rear Inner Tyre Wear

Issue 1:
Because it's a nice day up North West I wound my window down but whilst driving and when accelerating (pressing gas pedal) I noticed a very loud whoooosh noise from, what seems like, below the undercarriage. Releasing the gas pedal and the noise goes away. Gently pressing it, the noise if not that evident don't think. The car is an E90 330d 55-plate.

Is this the noise from the turbo? Or has my car developed an issue?

Issue 2:
Whilst monitoring my tyres conditions I noticed that the rear inner tyre and slightly on the inner wall, it has worn more than the outer. Is this a camber issue?

Need help.
p.s. since owning the car from Feb this year, I have nothing but issues, faults, and things wrong with it, makes me think whether the brand has gone a bit off in recent years!!

Issue 1: Sounds like the turbo spooling up.

Issue 2: I would say your camber set up is just wearing the inner edge

Rear inner tyre wear is normal on e90 as it runs with a lot of neg camber.

Wooosh
Sounds like turbos spooling up [you have two]
If you hear a whistle or woow woow noise there cud be a problem.

It's all about being the ultimate driving machine if you want a daily driver buy a mondeo 😃

There are only 2 in the 335d AFAIK. Thought the OP has a 330d which is single turbo?

Almost spot on ; the word 'twin' defines two items which are identical.
As I understand it, the 335d has dual turbos - smaller first stage (lower inertia/quicker spooling), larger second stage to sustain boost.

Whoosh & Camber

Had my 4 wheel alignment done and the car is now much better. I have heard the E90 is common for negative camber on the rears hence the uneven tyre wear. Incidently I am not running RFT's so what tyre pressures are you putting in for non-run flats? I have staggered setup of Falken 452's.

With regards the whoosh from my turbos; I shouldn't be worried then as the turbo is (are?) doing what they're supposed to be doing?

And, yes, this is my 5th BMW and I am loving it albeit carrying many faults and issues, but still puts an inner smile on my face.

I bet my bottom dollar that most of you guys look back at your E90 once you've parked up!!!

Also know as 'sequential' turbos in the 335d engines. Then we have the term 'bi-turbo' setups (two identical turbos), and now the 'twin scroll' single turbo.

BMW are now using using the expression 'TwinPower' turbo even for a single variable vane geometry turbo, confusing it even more.

They're using semantics and the fact that the everyday guy/gal doesn't know the difference between twin turbo and "twin power turbo" (twin inlets into a single turbo) to market their products.

It's clever and er... "carefully worded"!

335d

So, the 335d is really a 330d but with sequential turbos, rather than a 3.5 litre turbo?

Is the early 325 any different to the later models by any chance?

Yes 3-litres. So are some of the 40d designations. Oh, don't forget the other way, 325d also with a 3-litre engine.

The 50d is also a 3-litre, albeit triple turbo set-up like the 40d.

Must admit, the efficiency figures on some of the new 40d's are very impressive for 300+ BHP machines.

I thought (well been told) the 325d has smaller turbo than the 330d. So what the actual difference? Always wondered.

The E90 LCI was fitted with the N57 engine which was the successor to the M57 engine found in the pre-LCI. In both guises, the 325d and 330d had identical turbo chargers.

The main difference were different injectors and mapping, and I suspect a few other things such as intakes etc.

Whooosh Gone Louder

Whilst driving on the motorway this morning, I found the 'whoosh' + 'loud hissing' sound was louder than the other day.

So, I've had to drive back home and wait till 8am till I can call my BMW indy in Stockport.

Anyone know where else in Stockport area I can get this fixed if I can't book it in with my local indy??

BTW, the engine management light also came on and had a dash board warning message "engine emissions low" or something like that.
