2A87 and metal shavings
2007 328xi 6MT
Did oil pan 5k kms ago or so, change from Motul to Liquid Moly both 5W40. Doing my oil change today I found a surprising amount of shavings in the filter. I’ve been having 2A87 pop up 3 times in the past since June 9 where it happened on track for first code, minor dips in throttle when going into neutral and quick self correction. Happens 25% of the time while driving now, quick dip then normal. Im just thinking exhaust camshaft bearing ledges, Hopfully I don’t have a ticking time bomb.

If code pops up mainly near operating temp it is very likely bearing ledge failure. Run through the Vanos checklist to make sure (oil filter cage/ O ring, Vanos solenoid O rings, Vanos solenoids) to be safe but that metal is pretty convincing.
I did the job on my 135i a couple months ago, if you’re experienced not too hard of a job. FCP Euro sells a good kit with Rectaring replacements for future longevity. Many guides on the forums and I would replace inlet and exhaust since you’re already in there. Also pick up a timing kit, should run around 100-140 for a decent quality one, something many have tried to cheap out on and paid for later on. |
