First job = KFC, to make some side money for cd's and concerts, etc. Only stayed for a couple months because they asked me to clean the bathroom. I was like, yeah nah, i'm out.

Assuming paper routes dont count, my first job was at a local Seattle fast food joint called "Burgermaster." That place sucked. Weekend breakfasts were crazy busy. The owner was a total dick. I'll post up a few stories later, including my epic "burn all bridges, take no prisoners, to hell with all of you" way in which I quit.

Selling the newspaper for a dime in front of the local market in the late afternoons.

Just noticed the post above, my second job was working at a fast food restaurant.

Just curious but did you guys hate the employees over at Hollywood Video? There was always a bit of a rivalry if I recall?

I worked in the stock room in the basement of a novelty store in my little town. I had to assemble all of the bullshit trinkets for the store.

I worked weekends in my grandfather's/dad's machine shop pretty regularly from the age of 8, mostly cleaning up and doing light maintenance on the machine tools. First "real" job was washing dishes at a venerable Chicago-area restaurant called Hackney's. I was 13 and I think I started at $2.85/hr. By the time I was 16 I was running the downstairs kitchen on the weekends and was entrusted with the keys to the steak freezer and the beer/wine walk-in. Good times.

My first job was planting on an onion farm, for $2.60/hour (agricultural minimum wage at the time). Destroyed a pair of jeans in three days from crawling across farm fields. Needless to say, I have nothing but respect for migrant farm workers.....

First job was helping my mom clean my dad's office, so we would have some "Mad Money" I got to see the inside of the girls' bathroom early on! Mom, what are they little metal boxes in the stall???

Then a paper route, and mom drove me on particularly rainy days, or Thanksgiving.

Then I found some dishes to wash. Friday night all-you-can-eat buffet at the yacht club was brutal. And the colors!!

Kept me in school, got an edumacation, and got into gubbermint work. Inside, air-conditioned, sitting on my fat ass. Early on I found modems and BBS systems, so I've been working good enough for government for almost 40 years.

Did go back to washing dishes at one point, to help a family restaurant. When they finally sold it after about 3 years, they took us all on a Mexico cruise.

First job at 16 was in a kitchen at a place called Funstation. Kind of like Chuck-E-Cheese but privately owned, was actually friends with the owners son. Worked there until they closed.

Moved on to working in a grocery store, then mowed grass for my county, car wash, wrapped cars, until I got an intern as a software engineer. Currently WFH making mobile apps, fun stuff.

Fed or State? If Fed, hopefully you didn't switch from CSRS to FERS; assuming you had a choice and aren't single.

Paper route and shoveling snow then I think stockroom was first with actual paycheck. Also worked at landscaping, in an auto parts store, grocery clerk, as a bank teller, and selling oil via telemarketing when I was young. I made shit pay for quite a while when I was young, with that telemarketing job the best paying, but I hated it.

I hated that job. Once I got my drivers license I started to valet and make a lot of money for a 16yr old.

And I'll bet you didn't have a problem with manual transmissions, like the valets of today.

My first job was a conductor on the Stone Mountain Park sky lift. 40 hours a week over the summer and was a target rich environment for my 16 year old self for dating the gift shop girls. There's a lot of mischief possible from an empty cable car ride and I'll just leave that at that.

Sounds like a fun first job, with some nice benefits for a teenage boy with raging hormones. lol

We did not have a Hollywood Video close enough by us but we had a small private owned place called Palmer Video that we used to laugh at b/c it was very small and never had anything in stock.

Started Fed, but CSRS was already on the way out. My mom was Postal and CSRS. When I retired from Fed, I had just given myself a loan from my FERS savings, plus paid out leave, it was the worst tax year EVER! I owed close to $15G with all that extra payout and early withdrawal taxes.

Now I'm municipal, been here 18+ years. . .
