i just put it in second, recline my seat and yank like i'm trying to get excaliber out of the stone

I popped mine off when shifted hard into 2nd once.
Best WTF moment ever. Holding the shift knob in your hand, looking back and forth between the knob and the metal post sticking out of the tranny, all while keep accelerating and spinning hard in second gear. |

After reading this I had to try it myself... the thing pops right off. Doesn't appear to be held by any glue, just plastic pressure tabs inside the knob that click into the groove on the shift lever.

This is awesome. I just swapped my shifter knob yesterday as the one that came with my car was beat. I opened the sunroof and straddled both seats and pulled like hell. Not sure what i would have done with no sun roof.

Apologies for the necro, but I can't seem to see the photos in the original post. Does anyone have the details on this method, or an easy way to accomplish the shifter knob removal? I'm about to try it on my recently bought 2013 328ix (E92 afaik).
