Cayman S

Probably been covered before, but I'm about to replace the 335d. It's probably going to be a new 335i or a three year old Cayman S (CPO - three years and about 60k on the warranty).

Yes, two very different cars, but that's where I am. Opinions?

The Cayman like most Porsche's just looks like shit. People will say, oh yes, but it's mid engined, perfectly balanced, almost as fast as a 911, yada, yada. It's ugly, the proportions especially from the rear are way off, the center exhaust looks silly and the car is just a flat out eye sore.

The Cayman series provides a sad reputations for the Porsche brand.
The boxter is just a disgrace.

Get the Carrera (even if it isn't the S or the turbo.)

Erm, the Cayman is a great car. I think it's beautiful, and it's perfectly balanced (all that mid-engine nonsense mentioned above). I love 911's, but honestly they can never be as fast or good-handling as a Cayman can. That's why they don't offer the same HP numbers for the Caymana as the 911; they can't eclipse their flagship model.

Anyway, if you don't need a sedan, I would go for the Cayman S. But it's up to you; go drive one!

+1 on everything said above. The Cayman S is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven, and I think it is gorgeous.

OP I'm in the same boat as you im currently looking for a cayman s now. Forget what everyone else say I think it looks great, and you also wouldn't see one on every corner. Have you driven one yet?

i disagree with the anti-cayman replies. i loved the cayman when it first came out and i still love that car. my friend just got a Cayman S last year, gray w/red interior. that car is BADASS. like u already said, theyre two completely different machines, so hard to recommend one over the other depending on your wants, but i wouldnt knock the cayman.

It does provide a sad reputation for the brand, by demonstrating the fact that the supposedly performance oriented company will gladly handicap a far superior sports car platform to ensure that their ass-engined flagship remains at the top of their marketing hierarchy (as demanded by the Porsche "aficionados").

The Cayman is quite likely one of the very best sports cars produced in recent years. I would go for the Cayman if you can deal with the maintenance and repair.

I've driven two - a pdk and a 6mt. Both felt amazing. I, too, think it is a cool looking car, not nearly as common as the 911 or Boxster, at least around here.

If you were cross shopping between a cayman S & an M3 because you needed a backseat then yeah I see your point.

a 3series over a cayman S? is this a late April fool?

Gee, I'm dying to get into the Cayman S now, except the fact that it costs about $200k new here.

IMO, the cayman S in the right hand will look 100 times better than any 3series you've seen.

I'd love a Cayman, but then I'd need a second vehicle for winter, camping, golf trips, etc.

Since you live in socal, if you can work with a two seater or if you have another vehicle, I'd say go for it.

Our kids are almost out of the house, so my wife made the mistake of uttering the words "do we really need a back seat" before she realized what she was saying. Well, there was no getting that horse back in the barn...

The one thing she is blanching at is fuel economy, but coming off a D, nothing (fun to drive) is going to get anywhere close to that. The M3 is out for that reason. We are also trying to keep the financial picture close to what we had, which rules out a later model 911 or a newer Cayman. It's just hard to pay that kind of money for a three year old car, with no idea of its history.

We've got a Honda Odyssey and a Mazda 3, so no lack of options. The problem is, on days when I'm picking up more than 1 person later in the day, I'd probably be driving the minivan to work. There will be a lot more of that kind of thing with the Cayman...

I love the Cayman, looks and performance. In 4 years when my E90 is paid off I'll give it to the wife and get myself a Cayman S, hopefully new.

Its so funny to read the anti Cayman posts. Fact is the Cayman will out handle a 3 series and even the Z4. Porsches are sports cars. They are built for handling.

As for Boxster/Cayman being a pathetic series from Porsche, try increasing the HP and see which sells better. The Boxster/Cayman or a 911 ...
