Is your friend going through his insurance? Or the other parties. Most of the time the insurance will pay X amount, and then you figure out the difference between the new bumper, Y. So X-Y = the difference you'll either pay or get to keep in your pocket.

You may also want to consider getting a m tech rear replica to save your friend some money.

you should talk to your insurance first of your intention. Suppose you go ahead and do the aftermarket bumper, what happen if there is a next time of another bumper damage ? Your insurance is going to cover you ?

Your friend or his shop will get the check from the insurance company.
The insurance adjuster will only write a check for a NEW rear bumper, only if ur friends bumper is not repairable and needs to be replaced.
Just let the shop know that your intentions are of going with a different rear bumper, so they can tell you the price difference (or you can see from the estimate) and then have the shop order the bumper and you're good to go, once you've paid the difference.

u guys all need to READ, or in this case, LOOK at where OP is coming from, im sure ICBC does not work the way everyone here states...

yes ur frnd can pay the difference, BUT that really depends on a few things:
1 how close is r frnd with the shop
2 how legit the shop is

most well known legit shops will not do it unless u know really well them personally
