n53 engine owners
hey guys how many n53 engine owners are there out there. and what issue have you had with your motor.
ill start 2008 78k miles had noisy fuel lines changed but they seem to be noisy again(not as much) dont know if anyone else has come across this noise.sounds like fuel surging through the return line passenger side. having excess smoke out the back of the exhaust which im pretty sure is minor oil leak. but i dont want to face that just yet. got enuf to deal with right now in a busy life thanks |

N53er here. Pretty pleased with the engine overall. Very economical (500 miles to a tank on a run) and very clean (the exhaust pipes are spotless, no blacking whatsoever). I've done quite a bit to get it running at its best (see my sig) including partial blanking of the egr valve. I completely ignore CBC servicing and follow Mike Miller's system.
Interesting that you mentioned fuel noise as it's the one thing that annoys me. At idle I get a dull thud, thud, thud in the cabin which I'm told is fuel return pulsing. Sounds from what you say that there's no permanent cure... P.S. It's had all the BMW recalls for injectors, HPFP and coils.

I never heard of noisy fuel lines. The only issue I had was with HPFP and ignition coils. Both were replaced under warranty.

Got a one, too. MY2011 e91 x-drive (stock as of yet) EU specs.
Numerous troubles during first months of warranty (something in electrics, do not ask me what as I am a mechanical engineer myself...), ended with replacement of a main relay block). No other issues whatsoever. ODO closing to 140k kms as of now. Not to mention rough idle, of course... Run on 0w-30 during an extended warranty (100k kms) period, then switched to 5w-40. All metalic/chain clinging and valve ticking suppressed to nil ever since. |

And yes, I'm happy every day we didn't get the N53 here.

yeh was kinda gutted the noise came back, it was silent for about 4 months after having it done tho. might try a fuel additive cleaner product, but havent mustered the courage to try one yet, dont know which one would work or more likely kill the car..
believe me noisy fuel lines exists and its damn annoying, only hear it when fuel is returning so at the lights and coming to s stop say at traffic lights. but if u put the sound system on u cant hear it |

Out of interest, which specific pipes were changed?

I’m glad that I canceled order on 328i and bought 325i with N53B30 instead. After the initial problem with HPFP and ignition coils no problems whatsoever. The only expense in 95K km was 3 stage manifold, software and performance upgrades. N53 has more power, better gas mileage, no problem with lifters, no oil leaks no oil consumption ….

I drive most of the time with radio turned off and I never heard any fuel line noise. Maybe my exhaust is too loud.

And I have no lifter problems/leaks/oil consumption currently either.

I have DS Motorsport software, BMW performance intake with Pipercross, aFe headers and Supersprint catless exhaust. I had 260 whp last time on dyno before I had headers and catless exhaust.

So you are claiming to have gained 43hp from a tune and a filter? Not buying it.

You only hear the noise at idle/very low speed.

N53B30 from factory with no mods has 272 hp. So 260 whp is nothing spectacular.

The commonly accepted drivetrain loss figure for BMWs is 17%. Changing a filter and getting a tune for a total 313hp(260/.83) just isn't happening.

Recently got a chance to drive a BudVlad´s e92 for awhile... not only that it revs better (than a stock N53B30 272hp of mine), it definitely delivers a bit more power to the wheels. Besides, with his tune, an engine rough idle is (almost) unknown/unheard of.. Guess it won´t me take long to follow his tune path....

All dynos don’t give the same results (this figure is from Bosch and converted from kw). Realistic figure is ͠ 300 hp. That’s what DS Motorsport claims for their software and full day of tuning on dyno.

So their claim is 28hp from tuning?

Manhart Performance (another German tuner) is claiming 305 hp.

And AA says you get 10-15hp from their muffler. Doesn't make it so.

there is a phantom DS 325i n52 USA spec on here. That car has got a diesel like high TQ curve that rivals DISA tunes on a dynojet and its without a DISA!!, jut eurobox. An anomaly in the entire Dyno thread. DS motorsport is a worthwhile tune, that 325i has 2 sets of dynos - DS Bosch and Dynojet.
