I think it's 0W-30 LL-04. Castrol EDGE is what you'd be getting from the dealership. It needs to be fully synthetic, not a synthetic blend.

Snap !

I asked the tech guy who looked after my M3 and now 335i exactly the same thing last saturday.

No was the reply, too thin etc etc, but, bring your unopened TWS container in and we will swap it for the propper stuff !

Both are equal to the task. I run Castrol Edge 0W-30 in the BMW and Mobil-1 10W-30 in the Toyota. I figure if you use what the manufacturer recommends you can't be blamed if something goes wrong unless you've ignored the maintenance schedule.

How can 10/60 Castrol be too thin, it's like treacle? With oil, the first 2 numbers are how quickly the oil flows round the engine from start-up. The lower the better. The second pair is how well it handles temperature, resistance to breaking down and protecting the engine. Therefore the higher the better and very important on turbo cars that usually run at higher temperatures.

00/30 is therefore thinner than 10/60.

Recommended oil is stated in the owners manual for anyone who doesn't know but doesn't mean one cannot buy better stuff.
