335i - oil catch can

I've finally fitted the AR-Design oil catch can to the car.

Mainly to get ready for the imminent remap. but as a long term engine protection method too.

After 1 week and only 150 miles the contents forming on the filter has astounded me.

It's a nasty brown sticky ooze, stinks of broken down / burnt oil and petrol fumes.

god knows how much of that crap has been sucked back into the turbo and intake tract in the last 20,000 miles.

Well worth it IMO for those that want to keep their cars for a while.

In another recent thread I mentioned oil contamination by petrol.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=418979

And why I'm doing 5k oil changes as a preventative

BSH or AR Design. There are currently some concerns about the BSH car so I would go for AR at the moment. Don't touch the RR product - it is inferior to these two.

The AR unit is very neat design, a great mounting point method, and a technically good filter. I'll put some pics up after lunch.

If you do buy one, make sure you order the 'drivers side' version, which of course as they are made in the USA is our passenger side, i.e. airbox side of the engine. The 'passenger side' kit is hard to fit and involves relocating the turbo actuator vacuum vessels.

Most other oil catch cans seem to use the cyclonic separation method (like a dyson vacumm cleaner) with a simple gauze filter.

335i engines already have a cyclonic oil breather separator in the cam cover, and the fact that so much oil gets past it just shows how poorly it works.

The AR unit is very much like a compressed air line filter, with a 5 micron filter above a catch bowl for the oil to collect.

Seems to work very well too.

Oh B~ll@cks...

I'm going to have to get this done now.

An intercooler is a luxury but this seems to be a necessity from what ive just read. My car is now 50k and has been running a remap for the last 5'000 miles.

I am dropping my oil every 5'000 miles and using 5w-30w Castrol Edge. Given this will i still benefit from a catch can?? Doughboy, if so my car is due to go back in to Darren Wood for rear pads next month so i'll prob get this done.

How much was it fitted if you don’t mind me askin??

Also i've only had my car for 6 months and looking at the service history the oil was previously changed at normal intervals so every 16k miles. I'm thinking of a one off to get the engine flushed when my oil is next due as it likely that it has a bit of carbon build up with the previous stretched oil services. What do you rekon folks???

Darren Woods fitted my catch can, so they've practised it on my car! They charged 1 hour (£40) but it involves taking off the scuttle plate (pollen filter cover etc) and decorative cam cover off along with a bit of pipe cutting and re-routing.

Based on sound advice from Tony (as usual), quite a few 335i owners on here have started using Silkolene Pro-S 5W-40 full Ester sythetic race oil. (its called Fuchs Titan Race Pro now)

Read spec here - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68897-fu...ngine-oil.aspx

The 335i runs quite hot oil wise, the thermostat seems to keep it at 115degC minimum, 120 or so in traffic on a warm day, and mine flew to 140deg on a warm track day and mine is not mapped.

Oils are graded at 100degC so this means the already thin 5w-30 will be even thinner at 120deg+ giving less protection when hot. Using 5W-40 gives the same cold rating as 5W-30 but is thicker at normal running temps.

It's also cheaper than Castrol edge and outperforms it handsdown in every area. Its not LL04 approved but that's irrelevant as you won't be leaving it in for 18,000+ miles will you?

I'm sure it won't hold it against me . . . . . . it can't even hold oil, so it won't hold a grudge.

Thanks for the oil heads up, i'll order some in for the next oil change!! I always though edge 5w 30w was top oil but will give this stuff a go.

If you do have the catch can done along with engine flush etc. I would also ask for your intercooler and IC piping taken off and flushed also. This is where a lot of oil will have collected and may well be having a detrimental effect on your cooling system - particularly after 50k miles.

If you blow the motor and you are not using an 'approved' oil of the suggested LL01 and up, I suspect you'll have some major claims issues.

For that reason alone I would keep to a LL04 approval oil regardless.
BTW, nothing to do with longevity, but all to do with emissions and deposition

If its under waranty, why risk it?

Hi

Ordering the catch can today so will hopefully have it fitted very soon. I’ve decided against the engine flush as its running well and I don’t want to dislodge anything that might cause me issues.

I'm now changing the oil every 5k and combining this with the catch can I rekon I’ll be covered for sludge or carbon build up. I also rekon that after a few more 5k oil changes it should have gradually cleared out most of the crap that’s gone in over the past 50k.

I'll definitely mention the flush of the intercooler and pipes when i fit the catch can, sounds sensible to me!!

As far as the oil goes my car is a 56 so is out of its warranty anyway, Apparently this oil will give me better protection during higher temps and will be dumped every 5k so i guess it doesn't need to have a great deal of longevity.Tony & Mike are using this oil which is good enough recommendation for me.

If you want stay with LL04 the best you can get for a 335i is the Fuchs Titan GT1 5W-40.

£49 for 5 litres from opie oils.

However, the Titan Race Pro-S oil exceeds all the lubrication specs of the GT1 but being a more specialist product has not been longlife04 tested, this should be no matter if you are doing short oil changes and do not require the longevity.

Looking at the data of the oil used and regular changes there is no way BMW could deem any issues to be due to poor lubrication when you have exceeded their spec both in terms of quality and quantity.

If they would even check..... which i doubt it.

Think of the millions of fleet cars out there 'supposedly' on longlife oil (mainly diesels) and how 99% of users top them up with Asda Value 99p oil!

Glad you like the AR design one - post up some pictures when you have time.

I'll also have my intercooler cleaned within short. The catch can is an excellent modification for long-term reliability, IMO. And due to the excellent filter the AR design one is for me superior to others. Looks OEM, too.

Does this mod affect warranty?

Also where is the best place to get the AR one?

Depends what you want fixing under warranty.......

If its a creaky door trim, then I doubt fitting a catch-can will affect warranty, but if it's some problem with crankcase breathing than i'm sure it would affect it.

Yous takes your chances and all that.

Neil at juiced up tuning is a good start, BTW BMS have just released a new 335i catch can, looks the dogs..
