Guys,

I recently found a new best friend, called Mr. Clean.

I don't know how new this is, or how long people have been doing this out there. I'm sure pro-detailers know about this, but I haven't seen any thread about this in the past 8 years on neither e46fanatics nor bimmerpost. BUT THIS, BLEW MY MIND!

For those who had you car for years, and starts to have glossy leather surface on your steering wheel or leather seats. You have got to try this (unless you like the glossy look).

now you should coat this steering wheel with Carpro Cquartz Fabric & Leather Coating.

great find.... I would clean the wheel very well afterwards with a leather cleaner or at least soap n water.... lots of chemicals in magic eraser

I would avoid using a magic eraser on leather. Our leather is coated and when you use the eraser, you are not only taking off dirt, but the top coat as well, which will make your leather much less resistant over time.

I used a magic eraser on my old car and it looked great at first, but the leather eventually started peeling and it just went to hell from there.

Use a good leather cleaner, microfiber towels or an applicator pad and just go to town. It will take a little bit longer, but its well worth it if you care about the longevity of your leather.

I just re-condition the leather afterward, see you guys say, magic eraser should have a lot of magical chemical in it.

Therefore, I tested on my old steering wheel. But hell if this work, I only need to do it once every 5 years. I'm fine with that.

After doing some more research. Magic erasers ain't that magical anymore. It's actually act as a super fine sand paper like 10,000+ grids.

In which case, it makes much more sense scientifically, and is mush less concerning compare to chemical.

I also did a little experiment on an apple, just to prove the idea if this. And yes after rubbing back and forth on the same spot for about a min or 2, so maybe 100times?, the red color on the skin got lighter and juice starts coming out. But when I did it on my steering wheel, it only take maybe 2-5 rubs. So don't think it's thatttttt bad.

So if you were to do it, rub on the leather surface gently, and recondition after for best result.

After all, Mr. Clean is still a good friend.

As you said it's basically a very fine polishing pad. My friend found this out the hard way after using it on the rubberized plastic in his Audi.

They are fairly good at getting brake dust off wheels too.

Looks like it grinded down some of the pattern in your leather.

Get some leather master strong cleaner for the steering wheel next time, and whip down the wheel once a week or after every wash with a wet microfiber to get the dirt and grease off.

BMW leather is coated leather, in addition the steering wheel is usually clear coated, over time this clear coating will wear, and the act of rubbing your hands will polish shine the leather, magic clean eraser is a fine sandpaper, effectively dulling the shine.

I wouldn't use it its not good long term, just clean the leather or buy another steering wheel, they go for cheap on the forums especially the non m sport or m3 ones.

I think they're in every supermarket, but definitely Walmart, Sam's Club, and Costco... I use them on walls and baseboards at home, but as others are saying I'm not sure I would use it on leather.

Another option is to buy 303 interior cleaner. My steering wheel was all shiny like that as well and one spray of the cleaner and its nice and matte again :-)

So that's how my steering wheel should look like... hmm now it's all shiny I guess time to do something with it. Thanks for the idea!
