FIAT 126 (or 124) based car back from 60-s. RWD. Yeah, I had to have a set of tools in my trunk all the time just in case. But it never left me in a situation like Mini Cooper S where I had to call BMW Assist two times, cause the thing just didn't start.

Well used 1952 Dodge Meadowbrook for $150. Primary mod was to have the fluid coupling welded shut to eliminate the slipping. Drove it 75,000 miles.

Replace by a '67 VW Beetle that I put close to 200K miles on after I got it.

Got a type2 Busengine in it that was tuned to ~110hp.. I passed a copcar doing 100mph. The cops loved it and let me go
155/15 front tires and 185/65-15 rear..
