Watch out with the cables!

http://cgi.ebay.ca/BMW-INPA-Ediabas-...item230ecadfa8

http://www.one-stop-electronics.com/...&product_id=16

You can probably find with those examples. Typically the good one is the one with the transparent case like shown in the two previous links.

Typical description: BMW INPA / EDIABAS K+DCAN USB INTERFACE

Good luck!
This is not necessarily correct! The ones with transparent cabling seem to have Pin 8 still connected, whereas the ones with the black cabling from that eBay vendor and one-stop-electronics have it disconnected. The former will work on K-Line, Double K-Line, and D-CAN cars EXCEPT cars manufactured in 3/2009 or later. The latter will work on K-Line and all D-CAN cars (D-CAN has been used since 3/07), but not Double K-Line.

The reason is that cars from 3/09 on have an Ethernet interface on Pin 8, and if the car detects a signal on that interface, it drops the D-CAN connection that's being used for coding. A cable with Pin 8 already disconnected (or desoldering it yourself) solves that problem but breaks Double K-Line because BMW used Pin 8 for Double K-Line back in the day. Unfortunately that recycling of Pin 8 means there's no universal cable, so it's something to be aware of. Many people who have failed with the transparent cable have done so because they have cars made after 3/09 and have then succeeded purchasing the black cable. The vendor with the black cable does sell an adapter that will allow you to code Double K-Line from a cable with Pin 8 disconnected though, so that's how you'd get truly universal coding if you need it.

Also check out ********* dot com. Go to the Beginner's Lounge and read the Getting Started and FAQ stickies. That's a much more concise version of what's in this thread.

Wel... I don't want to start a war, and I hope we are telling the same... But I have a cable that look exactly like the 3 I posted above. Transparent case (not transparent cable) and I have a 2011. This is the cable that was mentionned in the first post and it works very well period. So the recommended cable for latest cars is indeed the one with transparent case...

All the cables have a transparent connector; I'm talking about the cable itself. Two of the links you posted have a black cable and one has a transparent. It's also possible that the transparent cable is now selling with Pin 8 disconnected. Even the black cable originally had Pin 8 connected, so time of purchase must have something to do with it. If you're worried, I guess the bottom line is to check the description closely and email the seller if there isn't enough information.

Just install a switch to disconnect pin 8 and you have a "universal" cable. I have the "black" cable with clear case. I soldered in pin 8 and added a switch. Good times!!!

I will check my file to see if another line was coded. I now remember there may have been a 2nd line that needed to be coded as well along with the TAGFAHRLICHT_ECE line. Stay tuned :-)

If you not gonna use the AHL try to remove S524A option from your FA/VO.

Yup the newest shipment of the 'black' cable I got from seller on pg #1 has no pin #8 and it comes w/ black adapter ('bout the size of the clear head) that has pin #7 & #8 bridged.

So when you need to work on a car that need pin #8 just use the black adapter.

How long did most of you wait for your cable? I'm at about two weeks now. Hoping that it comes soon.

Thanks! I just called USPS and they told me that it has not left HK yet. Usually I am really patient with these types of deals, but since there has been no communication, I have been a little more irritated with it. Thanks again! Guess I will continue to wait.

I just finish reading this whole thread. It took me almost 2 weeks. Now I already have my program running. Next I will be buying my cable and hopefully I will not encounter any problems with INPA and NCSExpert. I have an LCI X3 but I enjoyed reading this thread since there's nothing going on at X3's forum.

Also can somebody direct me to the spreadsheet that way I can compare whatever my LCI E83 will have in common with e90.

Thanks again to everybody. It was a very informative and helpful thread.

Go to ********* dot com, open the Beginner's Lounge, and check out the Getting Started and FAQ stickies. It's a pretty concise collection of everything you need and includes a link to the Google Doc spreadsheet which you'll have to request access to (it's usually granted fast). Enjoy!

Fun fact.

The main seller, mentionned in the DIY Guide and the first post of this thread sold 102 unit on ebay (ranging from 75 to 119 usd each). This is only the K+DCAN USB cable. In fact, including all the BMW serial and usb OBD interface cables the count raise to 148 unit. Interesting
