Central Locking

The central locking appears to suddenly be knackered on my 06 330i. Fob can arm/disarm alarm but have to use the key to unlock the drivers door; all other doors are deadlocked!! The button inside doesn't seem to do anything either.

Anyone had this before?!

Blown fuse? Faulty actuator causing the fuse to blow? ISTR advice on uprating a 15A fuse to a 20A fuse to stop this.

Garage List
I'd say the drivers door latch/cdl motor assembly is knackered....fairly common problem

Check the fuses first; the door locking fuses for an '06 330i are marked in red on the attached image.

The fusebox is at the back of the glovebox - see the video. If any are blown it might indicate a failed motor.

Thanks for all the info guys

Have been doing some more playing this evening, it seems that I can lock the drivers door using the button inside however when I try to unlock nothing happens, yet when pressed again I can hear it trying to lock the already locked drivers door - almost like the fuse has been for the locking action.

I can also lock the door with the keyfob but not unlock it at all.

Don't know if this is related or not but when I had my cigarette lighter charger in there this earlier it was VERY hot, I', surprised it didn't melt the plastic! Don't know if this is cos too much power is getting to it as the door fuses are out??

Steve, let me know how it goes. Car is still under BMW warranty (only had it 3 months) so will take it in there tomorrow in the hope they give me a courtesy car!

Does sound like the drivers door lock actuator is stuck, as Dave says.

Good job on the waranty. I suspect its an 'order part' and wait while fixed job then, maybe 1.5 hour.

Dropped the car off at westerly Bridgwater today, they were pretty good- said they didn't have any courtesy cars available but spoke to the salesman who sold me the car and they found me a 11 plate Mini One D.

Hoping that it is the actuator and not just the fuse as I think they will try and charge me for the fuse. Also asked them to look at the steering lock as I've been getting the dreaded warning message!

Fingers crossed I'll have it back by Friday....

I had the same issue on my 320d last night, turns out fuse 57 had gone. I read somewhere to change it form a 15A to 20A so that is what I did and it seems fine so far.

Hoping there isnt anything sinister causing the fuse to blow but time will tell.

As a side note, who the hell decided to put the fuse box there I am pretty tall with big hands so really battled to change the fuses. It was made worse by the fact that the fuse box is behind the glove box and the passenger door wouldnt open so I had to climb over and sit in the passenger seat to get to the fuses. From where I was sitting, when I moved my arm towards the fuses, I could no longer see what I was doing

I agreee, it is a twat of a job!
Add to the fact that often a lost fuse will be at night its just unfunny.

I popped the fuses for the cigar lighter by using an air pump.
What a PITA - upside down in the dark

To be honest I'm hoping it's not just the fuse as they're not covered by the warranty so they might sting me for labour for changing the fuse! I guess I'd have to argue that there must be something wrong for having to fit a bigger one.

Agree about the fuse box, I had a look the other night, took a fuse out, dropped it and then had to take half the footwell apart!

Forgot to mention that it was dark and the battery on my torch died so was trying to do it with the video camera light on my blackberry!

I know I could have waited until this morning or waited until the torch had charged but I would not have got to sleep as little things like that really annoy me

Why they couldn't have have done as Audi did and put it on the drivers side at the end of the dash so it can be seen with the door open is beyond me

It happened to me on Tuesday, all doors were deadlocked and having to use the manual key to open the driver's door. Repalced the blown fuse and all is well again, a neighbour also plugged his snap on diagnostic tool into the socket near the driver's door footwell and found no fault. Wonder why the OBC does not show this as a fault with no warning light when it happened?

The fuse box sit behind a panel inside the glove box and actually quite easy to access, not so when you cannot access the passenger door.

Fingers crossed that would be the end of it, but if it happens again I will take it to the dealer to have the door lock actuatos(s) replaced under warranty. A lot of US owners had this problem and judging from the numbers of reported failures it could even warrant a recall.

It's fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Picked up my car from westerly today with two new front door actuators and a new steering column.
Brilliant service from Mark at westerly, no problems re warranty, literally dropped off the mini and walked out with my car in 5 mins. Think I'll definitely have to consider taking out an extended warranty when the AUC one expires!

Good News James

Christ, a new column must run to three digits....

Also having some improved service now that the Irvines have moved on.

Shame as we still see Louise from time to time, and I believe she's back as part of the team at the Alfa garage in Canninton (the old family business).

She was very disappointed when we told them why we never dealt with them, it was so bad we went right out and bought a new Honda.

Had a big budget for a used M3 and not even a call back from them after a couple of visits, just could not be arsed - sad.

This crowd are a great improvement.
Now they have moved the clown salesman (ex skoda) who binned a 23k deal with me over 12m VED...tsk tsk.

Ouch, sounds expensive for the warranty company.

I cant help but wonder if the garage treats a warranty claim like a blank cheque. Unless I am being overly cynical, I would be surprised if it really did need all 3 of those especially when most others are solved by 1 actuator or a fuse

Good news.

I wonder if I should pay the dealer a visit as since changing the fuse no.57 last Thursday (when all doors failed to unlook) and everything worked again, now only the front passenger door failed to unlock, is it possible that No.57 or another fuse is blown or an indication that the actuator for that door is actually on its way out?

I never dealt with Irvines as I've only been a BMW dealer since end of 2009 and I think they changed earlier that year.

Have had good service so far from westerly in Bridgwater and Exeter.

It wouldn't really surprise me at all. I think the steering column was needed as that seems to be the standard fix for the red steering lock warning light. The two door actuators I'm not sure about, I did find a TIS somewhere on the forum saying that the actuator should be replaced. At the end of the day whilst it's under warranty I'm happy to have as much replaced as possible!

If your's is under warranty still I would take it to the dealer buddy. At the end of the day AUC is meant for this sort of thing

knackered! I guess we've exhausted (knackered)

I don't believe a mechanical part can get tired. I've had this problem with door locks for a long time now. / Poor engineering in my opinion. I love BMW, no question about it. Drives like no other cars. / but I'm frustrated with DOOR LOCKS, no mechanical way or electronic to unlock doors. / alsoutside MIRRORS going crazy and won't stop in the correct position. / door TRIMS keep falling off.
Just venting my frustration!

rear left window regulator

Hot & humid day today on the east coast...windows half way down since I was just replacing my #57 fuse, again. /storm on the forecast so I better roll windows up. Snap!!! there goes the window regulator, rear left.
It never stops! I fix one thing and another goes, time to part company with this car. European cars are good as long as under warranty.
If I could convert all the electronics to mechanical, it would be perfect!
Just venting my frustration... LOL
