Stuck caliper or something else?

Hi, I still have my E90 330D with 170k on the clock now with no major dramas for a while, until today.

I had noticed, over the past couple of weeks, a vibration at high speeds on the way to work that would pass. A bit hard to describe but seemed to come from the rear and not through the steering column. I knew when it was happening as the car would feel like it was vibrating and the rear window would look blurry with the frequency of the vibration.

Anyway, with that in mind, roll on to the drive home today.

My drive home is about 20 miles or so and about halfway back, the car felt like it missed and lost power for a micro second. A couple of miles further the flat tyre icon lights up. A few miles further and as I'm slowing down e.g. roundabout and then speeding up, the traction control symbol keeps flashing and it feels like I have no grip and difficult to get up to speed. Once at speed the traction control lights go off but the car feels like it is missing/stuttering. Slow down again and speed up and the traction lights come back on and it is very difficult to get up to speed as it judders/slips feels like it is missing.

I manage to glide home, as it is a near enough downward drive the last couple of miles, and into the driveway. The tyres are not flat (although I suspect it is not to do with that) however, passenger side rear wheel was very hot in comparison to the others which makes me think it might be a stuck caliper, or something else that would cause that much heat and those particular lights to come on.

Any ideas before I get it recovered?

Thanks

Dan

OK, I tell a lie.

I tentatively took it out and there was no resistance whatsoever so I don't believe the caliper is in a stuck state right at this very moment.

Also, the driver's rear tyre (opposite to the very hot wheel) was down from 2.8 bar to 2.3, it has a very slow puncture as I have to top it up every month.

So the flat tyre thing might be coincidental and accurate but I'm not sure...seems to be driving ok at the moment but only took it out for a couple of minutes!

Might be worth jacking the car up and trying to turn the rear wheels by hand just to check if you have a sticking/stuck caliper.

If not it could be the abs sensor or reluctor ring. If the abs sensor isn't working correctly or the reluctor ring is damaged then it could be triggering the traction control excessively which would also explain why you had a hot alloy/disc.

From the fault description it is almost certainly an ABS sensor or reluctor problem or if not something to do with the controller circuit.
You really need a code reader to give some clues as to where to start looking.
A siezed caliper would give different symptoms and the TPMS is correctly telling you that you have a flat tyre albeit on the other side of the car!

Thanks, could any of that be cause of the vibration I have been getting leading up to this? I am going to drop it in my local indie on Wednesday, luckily I have the use of the other half's car tomorrow.

Just an update to this, took it to the indie and they replaced three ABS sensors based on what the diagnostics said. The problem hasn't happened again since and that was over 5 weeks ago. Thanks for all the help.

Another satisfied customer!

It would be interesting to know if the ABS sensor that was not replaced is the one on the "hot wheel" but glad you are sorted anyway.
