This is a rare problem. It's impossible for me to say exactly what caused it without inspecting all the bits and pieces and I'm a long way from NJ. Take it to your indy and have him inspect it. If he's any good at all he'll give you an honest diagnosis. If you don't feel he's being straight with you go somewhere else for a second opinion.

Cool. Glad I could help. Let me know what you find out. I'm curious how close I got with this long distance diagnosis.

It's a u-joint. They eventually fail at some point.

Hope you get it sorted out. I was once going over a bridge and there was, nice, a shovel head, and it was heavy traffic, unable to change lanes and avoid. Got home and looked all around, seemed it punctured part of the covering underneath around the driver's door mat area....another time leaving work a manhole cover ripped out my rear right jack point...the world is against us!

I think driveshaft as well. Said he was driving the hell out of it and if there was some existing play maybe an up/downshift was final straw.

Jack it up and see if wheels rotate.

I see what’s broken but have no idea what it is yet. Just curious as to how or why this piece can break like that or if anyone had anything similar happen to them.
So what did you find out? Let us know.

Okay don’t think it’s the driveshaft because the broken part is before that, like closer to the front of the car.

..... also my mechanic friend bailed so I have kinda given up due to time constraints. Imma drop it off tomorrow and see though!

Peoples luck with N55s seems to be pretty different between the early cars and the later F series ones. Issues pop up here and there on the F series forums but overall they seem very sorted by their later years. We're at 58k on our 16' MPPK and it's like new, but obviously everyone's story hasn't been the same.

I would not in any way count on a tow driver doing anything correctly.

Sounds like his skillset would be a better match for putting stickers on control arms than driving a tow truck.

My bad guys. Been a lone week. So apparently it was the transfer case. Something about it can only happen if it’s leaking and doesn’t get enough oil that can happen. Idk. There’s a language barrier so i hope to get it back soon

Thanks for the update. I'm curious how much the repair cost is, if you don't mind.

There aren't fluid level sensors for diff, transfer case, or transmission? Is that right?

I guess transfer case would throw some sort of code if it saw the clutches werent grabbing or it was overheating but doubt it. Differentials don't have any type of sensors in them.

Also i no longer hear what i thought was the rotors touching so that’s a plus.

Cool. Glad to hear that you got your car back. It sucks that it took so long though. $900 is kinda steep for the front diff. I found some on Ebay for between $125 and $500. It might be time to look for a new mechanic.
