Matthew,
I am interested. Do you have any attorney connections to at least get the ball rolling? Typically, like for prescription drug adverse effects, a lawyer takes it up and starts soliciting BMW owners who have ticking complaints. This is done by advertizing on TV across the nation, as well as mags and billboards, giving an 800 number and email address to which to reply. It works great -- they get hundred/thousands of names of people with their info. They then take it up with the company, which usually settles out of court -- giving a hefty fee for the lawyer, and hopefully providing an engine fix for all of the people who file grievances.

How are you set with a lawyer who would dive into this one. Perhaps a BMW-owner-lawyer? Someone fresh out of law school who is hungry?

Has anyone else heard anything at all similar to this in their cars? Does anyone have an opinion to what it might be? I'm taking the car into the dealership on Thursday, but I'd like to have some idea of what might be going on first.

Thanks in Advance!

Update: 6/30/2007

I was perusing the net a couple of days ago and came across some great images of the N52 engine. Here are a couple that I downloaded that show the parts that cause the tick. I modified the first picture to clearly show the valve lifters.

1. Diagram showing the valve lifters
Attachment 84322

2. Engine cutaway view showing valve lifter position

I have the same problem on my 07 328i sedan but the noise
Only comes when I first start the car in the morning or the night then when it warms up ticking sound goes away I think it's a recall with the n52 engine
They are known for that

You dont have a problem since the sound goes away after warm up. It is only a concern if the sound does not go away after warm up. The sound is from the tappets/lifters and there is a TSB. Not a recall.

I didn't read through the whole thread but I've heard this only effects 06, 07 and some 08's. Is this true? I'm a perspective buyer of a used 3XX xdrive to replace my 330i but I want to know what I'm getting into.

Some 2009's based on the build date in 2008 for 2009. To be safe 2010 is the best bet. There is a TSB all over this thread for the specifics....

Can you point me to the TSB, or is it somewhere in this 100 page thread?

DL,
Thank you very much for the TSB.
From my reading of it, the car must still be under warranty? Mine expired about 6 months ago, or so.
Has there been any luck with getting BMW to acknowledge and do the repairs? My 07 Z4 only has 44K miles on it --had about 37K miles when it went out of warranty.

My car was under under warranty when BMW replaced the lifters. BMW had no problem with that. Replacing the cylinder head under warranty was a huge task, and that took about six months for BMW to finally make the cylinder head replacement.

However, BMW did a goodwill repair for the gentleman in the link below. The question was asked in the first link and answered in the second link.

Hope this helps some.

Do you have any hints how to approach this with the dealer? Or should I go directly to BMW North America?
Thanks.

TSB= technical service bulletin, it's a known problem with a known fix but not something that they will cover if it's not under warranty. I've been looking an E90's but I'm only wanting to spend about 20k and this issue along with a few others may mean I need to look elsewhere

Hey guys I recently just purchase a 06 330XI less then two months ago. I read and view all the videos in terms of the valve ticking sound. My car doesn't really have the sound but I just want to be sure. This past tues took it to my local BMW dealership to have it checked out prior to my warranty expiring. I spoke to SA and mentioned I know this is common problem and his aware of this. After they checked the entire car they didn't really hear the ticking sound. They check from top of the car and while car is lifted on the bottom. They of course recommend me to changed it anyway since it's known issue. However, my warranty with other dealership they only cover 50% of repair. So if I want it fix it would be around $1100 out of my pocket. If I post a video can you guys listen to see if my car is normal or not?

Kewl,
Try posting a video -- I don't know if the audio will be good enough to detect ticking, but it's worth a try. There are bound to be some discerning ears on this forum who might pick it up.

Regarding spending $1200 for half the cost of the fix, I personally don't have strong opinion either way. My main thought is that it's the company's fault -- and to blow off a loud tick as "it goes away and doesn't cause any harm" is just plain indicative that BMW leadership does not care that the perception is that their engine sound like cheap Suzukis. They have confidence in the ignorance and blind loyalty of people addicted to the Name, as opposed to actual quality?

Maybe the days of having a smooth and quiet engine are no longer important to them.

In the first video I can hear a very light ticking sound that is due to the lifters.

Second video sounds fine.

So, yes, it is there from what I hear.

If you want it fixed, all depends on who is paying for it. Mine was free. All in all by the time the problem was solved BMW USA put almost $10,000 to my N52.

Others with good ears...input on this....DL

First video - ticking; since it's at idle speed, from the frequency that it ticks, I'd say it's one cylinder.

2nd video - sound gone

I was wondering if I had the same issue, I noticed the ticking only happens on cold starts and the speed of the ticking increases as the rpms go higher. the problem virtually goes away after the cars warmed up a bit.

Typically, hydraulic lifter problems are noted as ticking because they drain of oil. When the engine is started, it takes a short period of time for the lifter to pump up, after which the sound goes away. After a while, however, the ticking becomes permanent.

One of the biggest causes of engine wear is on engine start up. The ticking means there is not sufficient oil delivery. How BMW can persist with their sophomoric denial that no harm is done is a sign that they have achieved the level that "the biggest lie will be believed" (a la Hitler) -- hmmm, not to be pejorative, but but but do they really want the comparison?

I'm betting that BMW Corporate is betting that BMW owners will get rid of their cars before their warranty ends, OR if the car is kept over 50K miles, say, BMW can claim that it's normal engine wear.

Low lifes. No different from the crap American car manufacturers fed US customers from the 60s to the 90s.

Well it's been over a week since my lifter was replaced at the BMW dealership. My car is quiet as a cat now and I haven't heard any slight ticking at times anymore.
