Pre LCI 330d - what to look out for?

For fun took a 330d for a test drive and was pretty impressed, but noticed a strange chirp noise when starting and stopping the engine. What could this be, or is this a normal thing? Other than that, the engine sounded good and felt very strong and smooth!

What other issues should one take note of with these engines?

Hi there
The only thing I know of is the swirlflaps in the inlet manifold.
If it's an early model there could be issues with this. I know a lot of ppl here i Europe that has got them removed.
The problem is that they can come off and be sucked into the engine with an engine replacement to follow....
Otherwise it's a great car. I love mine!!!!

Thanks!! Yep, have heard about that especially with regards to the E46 diesel engines. Speaking to a few people locally it seems that the chirp noise that I was hearing is most likely the fan belt which slips on start and stopping the engine, and apparently fairly common, so not really something to worry about.

Was very impressed with the overall feel of it!!

And if you descide to by, then go to promotec in Cape Town to get some more power.
change of Intercooler, delete of DPF and a remap, and it produces aprox 300hp and +700nm.
I got my IC from them.
Talk to Rolf, he knows a thing or two about those cars ;-)

Hey, small world! I know Rolf and the Promotec guys!!! How do you know him out of interest?

I can vouch for his mods on these engines though, he recently modified an Exclusive 330d automatic and it was making these power and torque values - went for drive in it and it was a monster!!

For now I think I am going to wait for a better spec model with a better owner history - this one that I looked at was apparently bank repossessed and then sold on auction, so too much of a risk!

Thanks for the reply and advice Allan!!

Hehehe yea small world!!
I only know them after doing a search on the net to find companies tuning the 330d.
And I stumpled over them and had a chat with Rolf.
Then I decided to order the IC and got it up here. Fitted by my local shop and got it remapped by a danish specialist.
And now the car just pulls like a real beast!!!! It wasn't slow before, but now it just pulls and pulls!!!
I haven't got mine dynoed after this but before it was dynoed to 265/602. And it's certainly got more power now..... :-)

Okay, that's pretty cool! He is also the local supplier of G-Power super-chargers and those sorts of things. But that 330d that he modified was really impressive from the point of view that it was really good without detracting from the car's refined nature. So the exhaust and engine note was still decently quiet and the engine's performance was smooth and consistent rather than peaky etc. And perfectly suited to the automatic gearbox, so no software changes needed for the gearbox to work properly with the engine.
