Strange start up sound
Hello guys!
I hope someone can help me to resolve my "mystery" I have 2008 BMW E90 (318d) with 60.000 km. Yesterday, on engine start up, I noticed a strange sound. It's a semi loud metal clicking sound that lasts for a half of second, at the end of start up process. Sound is coming from the center of dashboard. It's like some metal part bounces off a steel or metal surface. It only occurs on start up, during the drive everything sounds and behaves normal. Any ideas or suggestions ? Alex. |

Can't imagine what loud metal sound might be coming from the dash. Does it make the sound when you press the Start button with your foot off the brake (i.e., wake up systems but not start the car)?
Do you have your cabin filter out for some reason? I'd have someone stand outside the car while starting - maybe the sound is not coming from the dash, but just sounds like it.

OP, can you post a video of your car starting up or sound clip of your car starting up? I would also recommend having someone stand outside in front of your car with the hood open and record a video from that point of view when you start your car to see if anything out of the ordinary happens. This problem started yesterday? Did you recently change or add anything to your car?

Hi there,
Finally, last weekend I had some time to see what is happening with my „mystery sound“. Like silver07335i advised, I started to recall what I recently did with the car, and I realized that I did some cleaning of engine bay area and, doing that, I removed the engine plastic cover. A noticed two plastic guides at the end of the engine cover. Those plastic guides need to be placed in two metal housings which are located deeper in the engine bay. When I placed the plastic cover the correct way, “mystery metal sound” was gone Easy fix . Thank you all for the suggestions and help! God Bless! |
