I have discerning ears but am not an audiophile. I really have no desire to fine tune the EQ with a SPL and test tones and all that. It may make some cringe, but the most important thing to me is that *I* like the way it sounds.

I plan on messing with the EQ myself by hand...just tweaking it until I like the way it sounds. Should I leave the basic bass/treble controls at the default and just mess with the EQ? Or should I adjust the basic bass/treble first and then move on to the EQ?

You will probably have to adjust the Bass/Treble a little. The Logic EQ is severely limited for the lower ranges.

some song volumes are weaker than others. i suggest you download mp3gain. it can make those soft songs louder. simply add the songs into the program, enter the loudness (i suggest 95 db), and click "apply gain". the songs will automatically be saved with the new loudness.

another program i love is mptrim. it lets you cut out parts of songs. like you know how techno songs start off with a little beat and takes forever to get to the good part? well with this little program you can cut out the boring part and keep the good shit. i love it.

This may help if there are parts in the middle of the song that you don't want to hear, but in Itunes you can adjust when the song starts & stops:

For BUD001:

It is very simple to fix this in iTunes alone. In preferences go to playback tab, and check the "Sound Check" box. iTunes automatically determines the playback level, and if lower/higher it gets it closer to the mean level.

I have some professional test equipment in which I will measure the acoustics of the car and post the best settings to achieve a flat frequency response... from this point, you can adjust to your likings, since we all have different taste, but these will give you optimal frequency response settings to re-create the original recording as close as our system will allow!

is it not reasonable to suggest that "optimal EQ" settings are almost totally a function of your genre of music, relative to the quality of the speakers themselves?

Surely we wouldn't suggest that a singular "optimal EQ" setting will work equally well for rock and rap, amirite?

Hard to say what "optimal eq settings" would be because style of music and personal taste will dictate.

That's interesting sroc, you have one peak between the low and mid range, and not much high notes in there.

For all forms of dance/hi-nrg/house/hip-hop music, which is what I listen to mostly, I prefer 3 peaks - at low, mid and high. IMO, you definitely want mid and high to bring out the spectrum, and then it's as much bass as you can handle. Of course, this is just my l'il opinion, and it ain't gonna work with Manilow

Since the L7 is so freaking powerful, I don't peak the low end as much on this system. My settings are as follows:

80: +5 bars
200: +4 bars
500: +3 bars
1K: +7 bars
2K: +3 bars
5K: +5 bars
10K: +8 bars

Bass: +4 ish
Treble: +7 ish
Fader: -5 (to the rear)

So far so good on my L7, but I've never had so many bars to work with so I should mix it up a bit. I'm on music mode, but still playing with that and cinema. No Idrive.

My buddies are luvin this system, they freak when I crank it :rocks:

yea i got my bass at +5 also now and rear is from 3-5 depending on the song and and my surrons setin gis on thiether one but i want more base.....!!!! but still keep my hight!!..help any one!!!...oo and im using the top settings!

With the diverse genres of music i listen to, sometimes some of the EQ settings wont work. I wish BMW can allow us to save a setting (maybe 3?) so we can call it up instead of fiddling with the controls for 10 minutes in the parking lot.

You really need to get a sub in the trunk, or replace the sub underneath the seats. The former being the easiest however.

I did, and even though my trunk space is compromised, I love the bass that it provides.

Just tried equalizing the E90 interior with Room EQ Wizard and a Logitech USB microphone at ear level between the two front seats. Only one occupant in the car. The flattest response I could achieve was with the following settings:

80 -3
200 0
500 0
1000 5
2000 7
5000 7
10000 10

I'm showing the before (red) and after (blue) results below. There's a big suck-out of sound at 3000 and 10000. The 3000 showed up whereever I placed the mic, but the 10000 depended upon mic placement.

I haven't tried adjusting the bass or treble settings yet to see how they might affect the graph. Fader was set to -1 (rear).

This is totally an amateur attempt and I've never used this program before tonight, so take the results with a gigantic boulder of salt. I'm sure microphone placement and other factors matter a lot. Any advice on getting more accurate results?

That is fascinating. Thank you for taking the time to play around with the settings and for sharing your results. I've always wanted to know what settings could give the flattest response, but didn't have the right setup - just a sound meter without good reference tones or a way to chart out measured values.

People say audio settings are subjective - and on a preference level they are - but the settings that provide something close to a flat response is an objective measure. Everyone with Logic 7 has the same equipment and close enough to the same listening environment - so the settings should apply the same for everyone. Audiophiles strive for a flat response to hear the music how the artist intended it to sound. That's the theory as I understand it anyway. It's awesome to know what settings seem to best provide that sought after flat response to try it out at least.

Please update your post if you ever play around with your settings more and come up with any combination closer to flat.

That is a very interesting post. The only other thing I can think of for more accurate results is a more accurate mic and preamp. I bet results can vary quite a bit depending on the mic you use.

Room EQ Wizard is pretty good in that it lets you correct for your soundcard. I used an Echo Indigo DJ soundcard to generate tones, so I think that part's pretty good. However, I wasn't sure how to correct for the microphone.

As I said above, placement is a big issue. I originally tried mounting the mic by my right ear but found that I couldn't get consistent results because of where I moved my head. I've heard of this type of analysis being done with a mannequin with microphones mounted in the ears. That's a bit beyond me.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results with more professional equipment and experience.
