My situation was simple- the dealership never drilled the holes for my plate bracket and instead put everything in the trunk of my car upon purchase due to time constraints. I never put it on as a result because I love the way it looked- and just went with it from there

Prior to this I've had a front plate on every single one of my seven cars. Now that I don't, it looks so beautiful, and I don't think I ever will.

I'll pay the money.

I struggled in my mind whether or not to post this due to fear of jinxing myself, but I decided between myself and the powers that be that it was worthwhile- for the principle. Besides- I live in an area of NJ where cops are far more concerned with more serious things than front plates (I think.)

Either that, or they run my back plate and see that I'm a 38-year-old fart driving a convertible and feel pity. In any case, I consider myself fortunate- and very happy- so far...
OMG! I have hit a milestone. You are the first person of my generation who openly referred to himself as an "old fart." Wow this is a surreal moment. I am 38 too. I thought I had 2 more years before any of those labels could possibly apply. In my mind the definition of an old fart keeps moving further and further up the age scale as I get older. Currently I don't think of anyone under 65 as an old fart. Thanks for shattering my world!
Haha- don't you know? 38 is the new 65!!

Its just the Man, trying any way they can to track you and watch you. How about side plates too? What if you drive by them and all they see is your side? they cant id you!!!! OMG! Maybe a roof plate too? in case they are on a bridge or in a helli. where does it end???? I bet you can use that arguement semi effectively.

You don't need anything fancy - just go down to your state legislators' offices and talk to the people you'll find there.

Petitions are ignored. A simple handwritten letter is much better. An office visit is best.

That sounds like my first task than, I need to start talking to people and figuring out the best approach to this. Once I get a formula... we can cookie cutter that in all other states..

This article sounds like its on the same track which my views are. You can see the weak arguments by police officers saying,"Boo hoo we have to put down our donuts and coffee, so that we have to get up off our butts and do actual work <sigh>". To say that a front plate alone will apprehend a felon is dumb, if they are going to do something bad... they are just going to steal someone else's plates and drive on those! Nothing is stopping them from driving a friends car. You can just see the desperation in law enforcement as the cash cows are coming to an end.

Agreed, this is not an ROI based effort, it's purely about doing the right thing (which has no $ limit to it). It's kinda sad how over the years I've noticed many people only think about "what's in it for me". I have the front plates on all my vehicles, but I do see how law enforcement seems to abuse that law, so I would like to vote for change to drive a point home to law enforcement as they choose to bend future laws. That being... if you abuse what you have, you will lose that law to abuse going forward and it will make your job harder.

The arguments about people who work out deals with the local cop and what not are nice to hear, but it just demonstrates how law enforcement is very discriminatory. Discrimination can work both ways, for some people and against some others. We need laws/rules/enforcement which treat the public all the same.

Take for example Auto insurance rates, they should be based on actual at fault offenses and not tickets. I've been driving for 20 years with no accidents, that's 20 years of paying into a system which doesn't benefit me. Sometimes I pay less other times I pay more based on my driving record. But my actual risk is zero because I have no pay outs.

You do.

(If you work out regularly and have a washboard stomach, you can stretch at least 12 more years. )

It's the same way in everyone's mind. For guys, most of us might admit "not being young" or even self-identify as "old" relative to a given population. But trust me, not one man in the Western world seriously thinks of himself as an "old far" until he uses Viagra as a functional requirement rather than for entertainment.

60 may be the new 40; 50 the new 30; and 40 might be the new 20, but 18-39 is the same thing it's always been.

Right. I also suggest attending your local state legislatiors' town-hall or campaign events in your area. Put forth an argument of how this change would save the state and its tax payers' money, and be prepared to answer arguments from police as to how not having front plates on cars would make their job harder (answer: the evidence from states with no front plate requirement is that the cops have no special issues - very rarely does anyone taking down a license plate number for a traffic violation or hit-and-run get the number off the front plate).

ChipB - agreed. I think it's still a requirement because "we've always done it that way". And it would cut down plate costs by about 40% (I assume 40% because postal costs would be about the same).

Good luck

Someone said, why don't you make an effort to change the laws. I'm curious... How many of you on this forum and pretty much every automotive forum that is popular in the USA would support me in a cause to make change happen.

Basically if we can put together a template document and track down who to send it to in every state... I think we can make a change. This would require actual voters tommake a small effort and to also vote out any incumbant who does not make the change by the time his election period runs out.

For non-voters... Just bring awareness to the cause could help as well as letting your friends/family who are voters know about this cause too.

I personally think we can make change (either law change or political official change, in any case we will have change )

So who is with me on this grass roots effort???
CHANGE! For front license plates! Get real. There are better things to reserve grass roots efforts for.

Ah, so now you are going to make crime easer for the criminals since they will only have to steal ONE plate instead of two. Yay!

Wow! This issue is in no way grandiose enough to invoke the founding fathers. I think it makes much better sense to work on the issue based on its limited merits. If you make it easy for guys like me to check a box, then I am your man. Otherwise, I have other things to "stand" for.

I am not knocking the desire to dump this law, but I think it needs to stay in its proper context. For example, if I had a bunch of guys running around taking about seceding and forming militias because the want to "stand" for the unconstitutional law of a front license plate, then count me out. Avoid this counterproductive road.

Well if I lose one plate then I will know very quickly that someone stole it, if I still had a single plate on i might not realize that its missing. In this use case it would allow me to report the issue sooner, which can allow LE's to react quicker to the missing one plate and can only impact one criminal.

Another use case would be that someone steals both my plates to commit two crimes as single rear plates on a similar vehicle. Once again this is a much worse thing then only being able to steal one plate.

I like these questions... please keep them coming

No front plate requirement here, yet DMV never charged a penny less - so not saving any $.

You can't use a "real" plate (i.e. North American) on the front but others are permitted.

Hey guys, if you don't wanna participate, don't. This is America, feel free to sit on your fat asses and do nothing. But don't try to shit on people making a change and taking part in the storied tradition of fixing asinine laws. I couldn't care less if you don't wanna participate, but go ahead and exit this thread if you don't have anything productive to add.
