Hey guys,
Bumping this great thread for more information. I just took apart a spare non-M cluster to see what's missing to enable an adjustable redline. Our non-M clusters have a fixed backing plate for the RPM which is why it's not possible to have it move like the M3. However, the cluster's circuit board and the white plastic shell both have the same cutouts as the M3's! This means I should be able to harvest and swap the motor/gearset from the cruise control side of a non-M cluster and solder it to the existing mounts on the tachometer side. Then I'd move over the rotating cruise control backing plate and rotating mount and it should all be good to go, physically anyways. I moved these parts over and they all work and spin on the bench. What would be left to code to finish the job? Would using Perfekt Toolbox enable the adjustable redline, and then I can enter the custom threshold myself? Do I have to change the stepper motor settings as well or are they automatically inputted?

Potentially this would work. BUT I don't know how the VWF is transmitted. As it's related to engine temperature I'd imagine you'd need to have a working oil temp transmitted over the CAN 0x1D0.

Is there a safe way to open up the cluster for cleaning?

The settings depend on the speedo you're using. Its not the same across the board

so far "activating" the redline is relatively easy today.
Get a donor cluster, remove stepper motor and plastic ring from cruise control ring, install in your cluster, code the thing with PerfektToolbox and it "works". Did anyone get it to "really" work in diesel cars? (means does it change values like intended, mine just goes to warm position and stays there (n47)) |
