DIY : Installing M-Sport / Removing E90 BMW rear SE bumper - SE to M-Sport conversion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone Today I got to installing the M-Sport rear bumper on my 2006 BMW E90 SE. The job was easier than installing the M-Sport front bumper on my E90 SE model. This is my first DIY, but I hope it is a good one :P If you need any more help, please drop me a private message. I will be happy to help. Ok so let us start... NOTE : Some of the photos are taken from Google Images and edited by me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Persons required : - 1 Time required : - 1h 30min Difficulty level : - 3/10 Tools : - Female hex bits (extension is useful but not needed) and spanners (in some cases you cannot use bit driver becaise it is too big) - the sizes ranged from 6mm to 12mm, but have a few more sizes just in case. - Also a flat screwdriver is useful to have. Parts required : - [No 1 - photo A] The bumper skin (make sure if it comes with PDC holes or not). Most of the bumper skins come with broken top tabs, because someone didnt know how to remove it properly. There are many ways to fix the tabs e.g. plastic welding (call a few garages and ask for price as some charge a lot for this easy job), glue it together (it has to be a very strong glue, otherwise the tabs will break once mounted to the bumper bracket). - [No 3 - photo A] The diffuser (pre-LCI or LCI diffuser fits the M-Sport bumper, but the Performance diffuser needs furter work done on the bumper - some cutting). - [No 2 - photo B] White bumper brackets / guides (the M-Sport bumper has a little bit different construction so you need to but the M-Sport bumper brackets or guides as some people call them). - [No 4 - photo A] Middle bumper piece. It is glued to the bumper with double sided tape. Some bumpers are sold with this piece already glued, so once again make sure about that. - [No 8 - photo A] A couple of hex bolts as you will need some extra ones and some on your car are rusted making them useless. - [No 9 - photo A] A few C-Clips. The ones on your car are rusted and need replacing. Photo A : Photo B : -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 1 - Remove the pair of rear lights, those attached to the body of the car. - There is a cover inside your boot on the left hand side. Remove it using your hands, just pull away. On the other side remove the battery cover. - Remove the connectors by pulling away. - Remove the 3 hex bolt nuts on each of the lights. Here yu will need a spanner in some cases due to lack of space for the bit driver. - Now you can take the lights out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 2 Photo C : - Remove two tabs (marked 1 on photo C) with a flat screwdriver. - Remove hex bolt on each side. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 3 Photo D : DO NOT remove the wheel lol ! The photo D is just for illustration purposes and also represents the front of the car. - There are 3 hex bolts in the positioned on the inner rear arch. The photo D presents the rough position of the hex bolts. - Remove all 3 bolts on each side of the car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 4 - Pull the inner arch cover away so you have access to the top hex bolt which attaches the top corner of the bumper to the body of the car. - Remove the hex bolt on each side of the car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 5 Photo E : - There are around 10 hex bolts underneath the bumper. These are found on the very edge. Remove all of them Photo E presents the position of the bolts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 6 Photo F : - Now all of the bolts are off so you are ready to take the bumper off. - The Photo F presents the black clip which is mounted on each side. The bumper goes into it and 2 tabs are locked inside the clip. - Use a flat screwdriver to lift the clip upwards. Be careful, do not break the clip ! Once it is up try to take the tabs slightly out of the mountings inside the clip. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 7 Photo G : Photo H : - Ive taken a photo of the SE bumper bracket mounted to the bumper. On the photo G the three bumper pieces are inserted into the holes on the bumper bracket. It is very tight ! - Pull the bottom of the bumper (photo H) towards yourself so the three pieces come out of the bumper bracket. This will make the removal a lot easier. You will hear a click noise when these pop out. - Once again do it to both sides of the car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 8 Photo I : - Now everything is ready to take the bumper out. Be careful if you have PDC sensors. The wires are pretty short so do not pull the bumper out all the way as you will damage the wires ! - All you need to do is to pull the bumper out. Make sure the top tabs are released (the tabs where the tail lights were mounted). It will not come out easily so you need to use a lot of force. Do not worry, you will not damage anything. - Below Ive taken a photo (photo J) of the SE bumper taken out. All of the tabs are in tact - Do it to both sides. If you undo one side, put the bumper onto its straight position so the is no angle on the other side. Photo J : -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 9 - Now you need to take all the PDC sensors out. There are 2 clips on each sensor. Basically pull each clip away from the sensor and take the sensor out. A little bit of twisting might help. - Make sure you do not loose the rubber seals mounted on the top of each PDC sensor. - So the bumper is off From this point it is matter of time Easy job -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 10 Photo K : - Once the bumper is off you need to remove the black bumper brackets. Photo K presents 3 hex bolts on the top and 2 hex nuts on the bottom to be removed. - Once removed install the white M-Sport bumper guides. Make sure you attach it in straight position. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 11 - Once the bumper brackets are installed you need to put the M-Sport bumper on. - First you need to put back the PDC sensors in place. Make sure the rubber seals are correctly inserted ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 12 - Put the bumper roughly back on and insert the middle first. Make sure the bumper is inserted underneath the top black middle piece. - When you have done the middle part now you need to put the sides back on so the tabs will go into the clips of the bumper bracket. Just mount it sideways, unlike the removal. You will hear the clicking sound. - Also push the middle of the bumper sides towards the brackets so these 3 bumper pieces go into the bracket (please refer to photo G). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 13 - Put all of the bolts back where they were. Make sure you position the bottom sides of the bumper correctly so all of the C-Clips are in correct position for the bolts to be put back. - The underneath construction of the M-Sport bumper is different, but do not worry everything fits properly. - There are 2 additional bolts for the diffuser. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have done it, you will feel great lol Below are some photos of the job I have done : The middle bumper piece before spraying : Colour coded : M-Sport bumper brackets : SE bumper bracket : Bracket mounted on the bumper : Tabs on the removed SE bumper (all in tact) : The final result (the diffuser has been painted Sapphire Black at my friend's garage) : -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope everything goes fine for you and I hope my DIY is not bad Best Regards !

Thank you, glad you like it Cheers =] Thanks a lot Happy to hearing this Thanks guys I have bought the spoiler painted from eBay. Ill go and check it now for you... Ive bought this last year so had to check my PayPal purchase history. The item was purchased from Taiwan from seller called bc.moto. I dont think its on sale any more but here is the item Ive purchased : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2610072804...432%26_rdc%3D1 In addition to that you had to pay around £20 import fees, but it was well worth it. Great fit and fantastic paint work Ohhhh, I found this one in his shop, seems the same : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAINTED-BM...item5654474953 Good luck !
