+1. Nice to see that some-one knows what they are talking about when it comes to brake and steering shimmy

Steering shake when braking at speed

OK, 121000 miles

Just read to the bottom of these posts, and nothing answered my question.
I too have the dreaded steering shake when braking from speed. Here is what I have done to address it, but the car has also had annoying bump steer since I got it 4 years ago:

new front pads and discs OEM stuff
new upper/lower control arms (old ones seemed fine with little wear)
new guide pin bushings for front calipers (not greased when installed)
front wheel alignment
new tires, and wheels torqued to spec.

Haven't touched the struts....yet. Oddly, replacing the front discs killed the shake, but only for a thousand miles. I'm wondering if my rim/s are bent (have hit a few nasty potholes) but my tire guys haven't commented on such. I wonder if the bump steer and shimmy are connected?

Wheel bearings seem to be OK with no rock in the wheels when the car is up on jacks.

I'm getting really fed up with this, especially the bump steer which can be a bit alarming at speed.

Thanks!

Have you replaced the lower control arms? Shaking under braking is a symptom of these being shot. Very common on bmws.

And he's got bump steer. Which is another symptom I had of bad lower CAs. Time to upgrade to m3 control arms

Old bump here… if im having bump steer and brake shimmy, and I think its lower control arms, would replacing only lower arms solve the problem? Much as I love this car I’m not sure how many more winters I’ll get out of it, don’t want to do a whole refresh for the scrap yard…

I also know my tie rod ends are gone, could those induce brake shimmy?
