So If you followed the water pump failure thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=456856&page=2, you'll see that mine crapped out at 90K miles, about a week ago. Long story short, I managed to get it to the shop, and there, I had them change the pump, and thermostat. Well, I've been driving around for a while now and noticed two things:

1. Car now takes like forever to warm up
2. Can't seem to get my cruising oil temps over 200F Heater on/210F Heater off, even with flogging the car. (used to live at 230F/245F respectively)

I've done a bit of research and it turns out that the guys ordered the 335IS/N55 (11517588885) water pump. The one I had before was the early N54 one (11517563659), now discontinued. I also have an Aftermarket thermostat made by Wahler(11537549476A). I know it's the newest part number, but I'm not sure what it's temp is, or why the part number ends in A.

Anyways, the ultimate test is the track, and I'll be there in May, so I'll report back then, but so far, it seems we may have solved this nagging issue once and for all??

If I understand correctly this is a thermostat with a plastic housing the runs at 97 or 98 degrees C or about 206 -207 F.

This is definitely a nice find. Do you know if this is a DIY or if a BMW tech or Indy has to do it?

No, it's an all aluminum thermostat. Yes it's at 97C. I'm not sure how the N55/335IS water pump is also contributing, since it is more expensive, and most likely much more powerful than our original one.

It is NOT an easy DIY, unless you have Mad skills. It took my indy shop 8 hours to do it from the bottom. Steering wheel rack has to come off. All clamps and bolts are facing the other way, so you have to reach around and feel for them without seeing them. Other way is to take the front end off, and you've seen how much of a PITA it is from the pictures in the other thread.

Apparently 206F. No wonder they don't have oil temp issues.

I also have the new t stat in aluminum. My oil temps remain the same as before 230-240

My water temps are always 200-210F

Water pump and thermostat should not take that long. We've done many of them in about 2-3 hours including refill and bleeding. The antiroll bar must come down, but can stay attached to the links. Several of the hose clamps are indeed unreachable, but we have been able to loosen the ones you can get to with a swivel 6mm socket (Snap On, Matco, and others) on a long 1/4" extension. One or two clamps can then be removed and repositioned once the WP/therm are removed from the engine.

And don't forget the aluminum bolt kit. Torque is something like 10Nm and 90 degrees, IIRC.

But this is a nice find. The N55 WP may be a really nice upgrade for track guys.

Definitely a good find. A little concerned why it takes so long to reach operating temps though? Perhaps a stuck open (defective) new thermostat? If no issue there, and that perception of slow warm up is incorrect, you maybe on to something here. During turbo swap it would cost no additional time to replace this equipment either.

You very well may be on to something, but i'd like to see more than just one car do this swap and see if it's a fluke. You very well could've accidentally solved one of the biggest probelms these cars have as far as tracking goes lol

For the operating temp? This could cause more wear over time. Do you mean oil or coolant temps or both?

According to realoem, that pump is also used in the 1M.

How long does it take to hit 170? Just curious if one must let the car run for several minutes before driving off.

It's a superseding part. The older pump is no longer available.

On this note, my wife and I both have '08 335i's and hers warms up WAY faster than mine. I've always wondered why and this post may explain it.

Next time at the dealer, I will have them check my service history from the previous owner and see if my pump was ever replaced with the new one.....that might be the reason for this difference between our two cars.

Couldn't it be that your thermostat is not working correctly/at all? STETT reported similar findings when doing a thermostat delete with their oil coolers.

Whilst it may be fine for tracking or when you live in very hot climate, you won't get the engine to operating temp quick enough in cold climate, increasing wear.

Ohh, so all waterpump replacements from now on(atleast at dealers) will be with this pump? Good to know.
