335D help
Hi All,
New to this forum but have done plenty of searching here and in other places. I've wanted a 335d MSport Coupe for a while now and have just come across the perfect one. I'm just short of putting down a huge sum for this car, a 2008 model with all the trimmings included the dreaded 19inch 225 style alloys. Everything seems perfect about the car but now i am in serious doubt as to whether i should risk buying it when 'everybody' seems to have issues with their wheels. The car will be purchased from a BMW main dealer so will have a years warrenty if anything goes bust, including the wheels i assume. Ive read lots on the web about some folk having to pay for new wheels themselves even when in warrenty and the cost of tyres being passed on to all. So before i part with my hard earned, and the moment, head seems to be ruling over heart, just a few questions... - If the tyres are checked regularly, and kept inflated at the correct pressure, is it safe to assume all will be well? - If they do crack, what will be BMW's stance? will i have a fight on my hands or is it generally accepted by BMW they are at fault? - Do the 269 performance alloys have the same issue? i know alot has been said about the RFT, but after all the outlay i really wont be in the position to shell out on new non RFT tyres so that wont be an option. Honest opionions please, my research leads me to believe most if not everyone with the 225 wheels have suffered this cracked issue. Cheers. |

Get the 230 19" then you should have no issues!

Welcome
There's a thread here that has a lot about this issue: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190162 From a personal point of view, I've just swapped from a 335i that I had for 4 years with 225Ms, and I didn't have a cracking issue - so not everyone's got it

It makes sense to assume the 225m wheels will crack. If you leave RFT on and the car is under warranty, I expect they'll replace cracked wheels without any problem. However there seems to be a shortage of replacement wheels and owners have been left in hire cars for several weeks. I've managed to crack 2 rear 18" MV3's and 2 x 19" 230's ( 1 front, 1 rear). |

I wouldn't be so sure they'll automatically replace them - from what I've read, they'll check any cracked wheel for run out, to make sure it's within the tolerances it should have left the factory with. If it's outside those tolerances, their argument will be that you've damaged the wheel and therefore the crack is your fault.
However, who knows how tightly the wheels are checked before leaving the factory? Can you find one with the 18" MV3 alloys instead?

Thanks for your replys guys.
Nothing else bar the 225's are option tbh - they are the only ones i like bar the CSL replicas (any prices on these fitted inc rubber?) i guess what im really after is for a few people to reassure me, they have been fine and cars had no issues - maybe slightly misguided of me eh? Also, is anyone able to confirm the used car warranty from BMW is as good as the new car warranty, i.e. if run into any issues with wheels i wont be told the car is 3.5yrs old now and this warranty is not as comprehensive. Advice and opinions welcomed. |

Some really nice CSL reps that look great on the e9x
Alufelgen i think do some. The 225's are more prone to cracking but not every owner has suffered. I think it would be silly to dismiss a car because the wheels could crack. The price of replacement alloys is fairly small in proportion to the cost of the car. It would be a different story if we were talking about a ford focus. But for an pretty expensive car, £500 - 1k for a pair of new wheels (2nd hand) should be affordable. I reckon you could sell the RFT's and the 225's and get some CSL reps and falkens for not much more. And i think they will look better. ... As for experiences. The suspension is stiff, the 19's run flats are hideously hard and most of the impact energy from hitting a pothole doesn't disperate through the rubber, there is barely any flex. So most of this impact transmits through to the alloy. The rears have some negative camber and a lower 30 profile. This leaves them more prone. I wonder whether because of the lower profile rears whether the inside edge of the alloy actually makes contact with the road at certain angles when hitting potholes or perhaps trying to straight line speed humps. I reckon it is possible. Last edited by briers; 06-01-2011 at 05:15 PM.. |

Why dont you ask the dealer that you are intrested in some other sort of wheels and only on that condition you will buy the car ?
I have seen lots of used wheels are being sold by the dealers on ebay probably because when people buy cars they have the wheels changed for some other style by paying for that specific wheels less the money of their own wheels. |

I had a 335D with 225 rims on my car, no issues at all. I checked the tyre preasure once every few weeks, and had done 37k on them.
90% of my driving was probably motorway, if that makes a difference. |

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I recently sold my 225's after doing almost 20k without any issues/problems....for CSL's :-)
As for purchasing new wheels...I know a good place got mine in matt black with new Falkens for less than a £1k.

As regards warranty the Approved Used Car warranty is not as comprehensive as the manufacturers warranty. There are quite a lot more exclusions, for example pipes are excluded which on the 335 could mean the red turbo pipe which is a common failure. Do a search on here about that and make sure the car you are buying is not affected.

11k miles with 225's and touch wood no issues except a nail .
I was having exactly the dilema as the OP when I bought my 335i. I just thought if they crack and the dealer won't replace them I'll just by a set of 225 replicas or csl reps for around £550. I want to put non run flats on mine but I don't want BMW to wriggle out of a claim if they do crack. |
