Reusability of Tension Strut Bolt

FCPeuro says one should use a new bolt when replacing the tension strut (or bushing) because of corrosion.

Has anyone seen corrosion on their bolts when doing the strut?

It generally should be replaced because it's a TTY bolt with a one-time use locknut, but yes it can also corrode slowly over time. It has a corrosion-resistant coating that doesn't last forever.

Dont reuse them. I loosened mine to install new struts and when I started to re torque, before it was tight it stripped and would not go in or out. Took about 3 hours with the air cut off wheel. Replace them.

Re use. I have. Numerous times. Probably put my 2008 E90 under lot more stress than ordinary E90. Been tracking it since 2010. Zero issues with re use.
Additionally many of these and also other make and models use TTY that are being re used every day. Very common to do so. Unlike the failures from reuse.
If is so vital when they sell you the replacement part it sill come with replacement bolt as well.

Not every angle torque spec is also TTY.

That's a grade 10.9 M12x1.5x85mm. 100NM+90deg does not yield that fastener.

FCP euro and Bentley say to replace them... I just reuse them. And I install them Guten'tight. I'm a bad BMW owner :P

If it's rusty and corroded of course replace it (with something from the local hardware store) Sometimes a bolt is just a bolt.
