2A87, Exhaust VANOS back after replacing vanos solenoids
So sometime in February my car started running like crap, I scanned the codes and had faults for both intake and exhaust VANOS, I buy new genuine solenoids from FCP and replace both of them, car runs mint afterward. Now 7 months later the VANOS code is back and I stalled at an intersection which is not fun. I've only driven the car about 2k miles since then because of covid and all of the stuff related to that. I know that dirty oil could possibly cause this and I did my last oil change in June about 1.5k miles ago. What should I do now? I would really dread if its the cam ledge issue.

If the code prevails I'd have a look at the vanos check valves. If cleaning an old solenoid or getting a new one fixes things temporarily it only means to me there's some clogging at those check valve screens. Ofc this is given you have all o rings and such in place in the oil filter cap basket.

Well I "swapped" the solenoids around yesterday... except I forgot to label which one was intake and which one was the exhaust solenoid, so I might've just put them back in their original positions. Very dumb mistake by me.
The code did come back after this, still on the exhaust side, hopefully by Friday or Saturday this week I can get the time to label them and actually do it right. |

okay actually did it the right way, code is still 2a87, still on the exhaust side, so it seems as though the solenoids are not the issue. Should I do my non-return valves now?

I had new solenoids in for preventative maintenance last year and it's throwing codes again, I got an exhaust non return valve in the post from eBay as we speak so maybe we have a similar issue! I'll report back if it makes any difference. Given they are so cheap and easy to replace I didn't see any reason not to do it.
