I have 4 kids and a shit job, so it was a long time before I got back into something fun. I know it sucks not having that toy, but if you can't afford both I'd say wait on the toy.
he wants an E91.. you're going to have to add a 1 in front of that 4, if you want a 6mt that's not beat to hell.

Nothing to talk you out of here. Go for it.
It's our family's daily fun car that we fight over, but wife drives it to work. xDrive, 6MT.
No doubt, RWD is a better driver's car, but I wouldn't send my wife with my daughter in the back into snowy day in a RWD wagon. So, I am quite happy with xDrive. It's much more fun to drive than our newer Audi Allroad.

Sooo regret my wife selling her 325xi 6mt! Funny thing is it's still probably worth about $12k...

He was saying he was thinking of it as a sort of compromise. My solution was don't compromise. Keep the truck and get an e92.

Thanks for the replies so far, they are definitely food for thought.

If I were to find one with 80 - 120K miles, what should I expect in terms of maintenance?

I mean, is it a matter of needing to replace / rebuild a bunch of the 'usual suspects' and then the car would be generally reliable for another 100K? E.g., rotors, pads, gaskets, spark plugs, water pump, VANOS, etc.

Or do things start breaking on a random basis?

I love my 09 328XI and only paid $5000 Canadian for it with about 120000 miles. Put another $1000 into it with brakes all around and some other things. I'm at $6000 Canadian so thats close to $4000 US.
That being said, next one is a stick and I think the wagons are cool as shit.

I bought on at 101K miles.

nnow at 163K 3 years later.

I have done ESS, valve cover, water pump/tstat, a handful of hoses, a starter, OFHG, struts, brakes and normal prevantitive fluid changes and such.

the only thing that left me stranded was the starter.

Lately I've been thinking an e91 xdrive would restore most of the enjoyment I had with the e92, and also be a practical fit for family life and our long snowy winters.

That, of course, assumes I could find one...

Talk me out of it?
Under no circumstances should you ever buy one of these cars with xDrive in it. Believe me, I came from 14 years of DD'ing a RWD 325i to an AWD 328i and I f**king hate xDrive. It absolutely ruins the dynamics of the car, and a decent set of snow tires will get you anywhere in a RWD version of this car that all seasons and xDrive will get you. Plus you get the added benefit of protecting your nicer wheels by not running them in the winter.

That's a bit hyperbolic. While I agree the driving dynamics of the RWD E90 are better than the xdrive versions, it's far from being absolutely horrible. I owned both (with manuals) and drove them back to back many times.

If you want horrible, try an equivalent Subaru from the same generation. After years of hearing the marketing hype, our Subaru was one of the worst cars I've ever driven in inclimate weather.

While I dislike xdrive, mainly it's suspension setup, I have to say the biggest downside to it is the moronic steering ratio. You have to turn the wheel way too much and well then there is the issue of servicing the car itself where everything from under is either on top of the subframe or with an axle close to being in the way.
I wouldn't get rid of the system since I already have it but if you never plan on moving to a snowy state or thinking your car is a Jeep get the rwd.

I was thinking the same thing, looking at the sticker. Any idea on how to get an old sticker or a reproduction. sorry for off topic banter. To orginal poster purchase the best one you can find.
