Nothing to talk you out of here. Go for it.
It's our family's daily fun car that we fight over, but wife drives it to work. xDrive, 6MT. No doubt, RWD is a better driver's car, but I wouldn't send my wife with my daughter in the back into snowy day in a RWD wagon. So, I am quite happy with xDrive. It's much more fun to drive than our newer Audi Allroad. |

Thanks for the replies so far, they are definitely food for thought.
If I were to find one with 80 - 120K miles, what should I expect in terms of maintenance? I mean, is it a matter of needing to replace / rebuild a bunch of the 'usual suspects' and then the car would be generally reliable for another 100K? E.g., rotors, pads, gaskets, spark plugs, water pump, VANOS, etc. Or do things start breaking on a random basis? |

I love my 09 328XI and only paid $5000 Canadian for it with about 120000 miles. Put another $1000 into it with brakes all around and some other things. I'm at $6000 Canadian so thats close to $4000 US.
That being said, next one is a stick and I think the wagons are cool as shit. |

nnow at 163K 3 years later. I have done ESS, valve cover, water pump/tstat, a handful of hoses, a starter, OFHG, struts, brakes and normal prevantitive fluid changes and such. the only thing that left me stranded was the starter. |

That's a bit hyperbolic. While I agree the driving dynamics of the RWD E90 are better than the xdrive versions, it's far from being absolutely horrible. I owned both (with manuals) and drove them back to back many times.
If you want horrible, try an equivalent Subaru from the same generation. After years of hearing the marketing hype, our Subaru was one of the worst cars I've ever driven in inclimate weather. |

While I dislike xdrive, mainly it's suspension setup, I have to say the biggest downside to it is the moronic steering ratio. You have to turn the wheel way too much and well then there is the issue of servicing the car itself where everything from under is either on top of the subframe or with an axle close to being in the way.
I wouldn't get rid of the system since I already have it but if you never plan on moving to a snowy state or thinking your car is a Jeep get the rwd. |
