N53 oil (mileage dependent)

Hello all
I've searched quite a bit for this, but didn't really fine what I'm looking for. As far as i am aware BMW recommends 5w-30 Castrol edge, however I have heard from many people, using 5w-40 after a 100k is quite a bit better compared to 5w-30. Is this true? also, I've heard shell helix being a better oil than Castrol edge, is this true?

PS- anyone got anything on Castrol magnatec( fully synthetic)?

With a question like this you'll get as many opinions as there are brands of oil! Any good quality, fully synthetic oil that complies with BMW LL04 standard will be fine. Car manufacturer brand recommendations mean very little as they're a marketing deal. BMW stopped recommending Castrol several years ago and now recommend Shell I believe.

As above, stick to LL04 and you should be fine. I use Fusch oil, as it's good quality and a good price. I've used 5w-40 but didn't really see any difference to be honest my car's coming up to 90k miles now (325d). If you engines a little more worn in you may see the benefit as less oil loss between services.

Basically 5w-40 is better at retaining its viscosity at higher temps. This explains it well:
