BMW 335ia

Today I was detailing my friend's 335, but noticed his door placard said 335ia. Does anyone have any insight? Thank you.

If I remember correctly, the "a" denotes its an automatic. I've only seen this type of designation used on the stickers that are mounted on the chassis, most notably on the drivers door opening.
