Quietest setup for headers and PE muffler

I feel like this has been discussed before but I'm having a hard time sifting through all the data.

What can I stick between headers and the PE muffler that would keep the overall exhaust volume level near the stock manifold / full PE combo level?

Should I consider going to the AA muffler if I'm trying to keep the system as quiet as possible?

Add a resonator and call it a day or you can try stock secondaries or do both. You should measure how many decibels your exhaust is when you redline it.

That's a good idea. I have the equipment to do all that too.

It's going to be loud no matter what. Cut your losses and go with a different muffler.

I would be curious to know what this setup would sound like with factory secondaries & OEM resonator & PE. Surprised no one has tried this, especially since most people would most likely have the original resonators sitting in their garage when installing the PE.

I agree w/ Task...
She's gonna be loud now...
Unless you want to be counter intuitive (slightly) and put some restrictive secondaries in place

I imagine it'll be loud...it's just a matter of HOW loud. I'm not sure if I would be happy if it were past a certain volume level. Yet, I feel like the extra power would be pretty sweet.

I have my stock silencer and muffler in storage, won't be picking them up for a while.

A PE isn't a huge (if any type) of upgrade in comparison to stock. Just go with a different muffler and leave the PE to people who don't want headers.

I'm in the same boat as I plan on eventually going with headers while keeping my PE (because it sounds great, is built well, looks great, and is the only option other than stock that retains the box's shape for aero). Would love for you to be the guinea pig.

I've been looking into a couple of ideas... I'm thinking a straight-through muffler/'glass-pack' on the PE mid-pipe will be the best option, I'm just trying to decide on a good one that will fit. I'm curious about going back to the stock resonator but I doubt it would make a huge difference.

I am installing AA headers this week. I already have the Gen2 axel back, custom resonator and secondary cat delete. I will let you know how it sounds.

I am a fan of the AA Gen2 axel back as it has a small muffler and drone chamber. The sound now is great. Hopefully it will be even better after headers go in.

That seems to be the general consensus. So I hope we are both right Noir!

I put the OEM resonator back with the PE muffler and man did it sound perfect. It was a bit quiter compared to just the PE without headers but in high rpms it was gold.

I miss that sound... Now I have everything stock after the headers and there is no noise at all, basically sounds stock.

I gave my PE to my brother for his E90, felt bad only using half of the exhaust, looking to get SS exhaust now.

After spending close to $900 hacking up my stock exhaust system with various resonator and muffler combinations almost four times, I have gone back to an OEM muffler with my aftermarket headers. Call me old, but I'm loving the silent exhaust. The only time it growls is when I am WOT and that's largely due to my AFE Stage 2 intake.

Hey man, there are days where I daydream about having a sleeper.

Then of course, I sometimes feel bad for neighbors (particularly when I was needed @ work between 00:00 and 05:00 and I kinda cringed like "ooooof, sorry everybody"

Wait. So you're saying that stock headers + stock secondary cats + PE catback (no resonator + PE muffler) is LOUDER than catless headers + stock secondary cats + OE resonator mid-pipe + PE muffler?

If so, I'm very surprised that the OE resonator has more sound attenuating properties than the OE catted manifolds.
