Surging idle when in drive

When letting the car idle in drive the idle goes crazy jerking the car. Gets worse with the A/C on. Changed ignition coils and both fuel pumps are brand new. No codes

Mine wasn't as bad but the rpms surged when slowing down in stop and go traffic; usually when keeping under 20 and it also surged with the A/C on.

An update of the DME usually will fix it. I had my DME upgraded to get the PPK1 and it eliminated the stop and go idle surge and the a/c idle surge.

Yes, it sounds like your DME needs to be updated. Can use the PPK if it's 02/2012 or older. If it's newer, the OEM version will fix the issue too.

I am full bolt ons with some e85 on MHD. My car is actually 12/03, do I still update the dme or would that mess up the tune?

We can still flash the update, but you'll have to re-flash MHD afterwards. So, as long as MHD supports the latest ROM, you won't have any issues.

Had the exact same violent jerking at red lights, with no mods. For me it was the coils.

But you've already changed all of them. Are you using Bosch or Delphi ?

I have the surging too. What all is entailed with a DME update? is this something I need to get from the stealership or can it be done somewhere else? And what is the cost?

Does anyone know for sure this update will in fact fix the issue? I am hearing it could be coils (which I've replaced) or the vacuum line to valve cover from intake manifold, or Valvetronic servo motor.

I don't think anyone will be able to definitively diagnose this over the internet. There are a lot of variables involved, many you have already listed. The DME update also being one of them. BMW released 2 DME updates within a one year span, because the previous release introduced this issue. If you were to take this to the dealership, I can say without a doubt they would flash your car to the latest DME update as part of the solution (if not thee solution).

If you're able to view your current DME software number, and it begins with 863**** or less, then it's highly likely the DME update will correct your issue. FYI, the latest DME updates begin with 868****.

Is it the Factory software number? if that's the case mine is 7613700 per the MHD app pulling it up.

If that is in fact the current software number, then I'd suggest updating to current version. That seems like the original/factory version, and there have been several updates released since then.

To follow up and give Joe at Top Gear Solutions kudos, the ppk flash was quick and easy and fixed the surging issue I had with the update. Also gave it an extra 20hp in stock form, nice exhaust note and burbles. Thanks Joe!

Just depends on what PPK software number you have, as it was also affected.
