Can someone tell me what this is?

I removed the plastic shield from under the car and it came out when I slid it from the car. It's about the size of a walnut.

^lol

It goes on a stud underneath the airbox (assuming the airbox is stock)

The box has an indentation it sits in so it wont vibrate

That doesn't look like the airbox grommets that I have...

More like a rubber 8-shooter holder

Yeah it's the N52 airbox locating thingy, as said above. Once it slides out once it gets loose and ends up falling out again and again. When it's not there, in some cases, the entire airbox and front duct assembly will vibrate/resonate like mad at low idle. I'm fairly certain mine has spent more time bouncing around the undertray than on the actual airbox.

Putting some black RTV in the middle hole before installing it again should do a sufficient job at keeping it where it's supposed to be.

I think they put a string thru the center hole so it can be retrieved.. Or is the center hole an exhaust port.. Can't keep up with the times now days..

It definitely puts the 'plug' in butt plug

I filled mine with what I had laying around (flex shot/clear silicone) and so far its held

Thx for this, I found one bouncing around during my disassembly had no clue, threw it in the bolt box to figure out later. Probably wouldn't have and had a spare 8 shooter butt plug. I put it where I assume you're saying it goes,,,

After numerous customer complaints, BMW updated the original design to prevent ingestion through the crankshaft seal.
