New TPMS issue.

So I had an issue with my old tpms and valve as it was leaking air, shop said to replace it and they did. But for some reason the car keeps giving me a malfunction. They used an aftermarket sensor so we ended up ordering a BMW sensor at no charge etc. My issue is they said once installed they have to calibrated and would take a few hours. Is this normal? I've always just believed the you can install then do a reset from I-Drive.

There should be no calibration period. When I switch between summer and winter sets I don't even need to do a reset.

They put aftermarket on only 1 wheel since old one was broken. But the car was not accepting it. They ended up having to get OEM one instead.

Maybe it didn't like 2 different brands??

I bought a non-BMW set from a forum sponsor and they registered fine. Well … with the exception that I constantly get a "reset TPMS" error. I can reset the system and all is fine for 10 miles until it flakes out again. Even when it needs resetting, the tires show green in the iDrive screen. So yeah, I think all that is required is that you reset the system in iDrive and all should be OK. Unless your computer flakes out like mine.

Mines kept giving malfunction and a fault, when I clear the fault it shows all green but after like 10 minutes of driving it goes off again. Guessing it's not accepting it.

^ Exactly what is happening in my car. Hmmm … so maybe it is the sensors and not the computer??? Did the OEM sensor fix the issue?

It does not take hours to calibrate, more like only a few minutes of driving. You can reset this from I-drive. I had to do this when I first bought a winter set of tires with new sensors.

Some of the aftermarket TPMS sensors are configurable for more than 1 make / version of TPMS. The sensors must be programmed to match the BMW TPMS frequency. Since BMW changed TPMS frequencies in 2009, they may have ordered one for the wrong year BMW, or programmed it wrong.

I'm getting it swapped tomorrow, I'll update you. All they said is the computer was not accepting the aftermarket which happens in a few cars and they will just install OEM one that will be calibrated once installed so the system accepts it.
