Dealer wont replace fuel pump

They said they cant replace it since its not throwing a code yet. They even kept it overnight so they can feel the shaky cold starts and still wont replace it.

Funny thing is they gave me another 335 as a loaner..first cold start took about 10 seconds. Can I get a loaner for my loaner ?

Put the car in 6th gear going like 60 mph and floor it... you will get a 1/2 engine icon by the time you hit 4k RPM's with a bad pump

That is nothing close to mine incident. My car shutoff on the highway at 80, I manage to get the car to restart after an hour trying. Then drove to the dealer and three days later, dealer said its okay, and nothing was replace, all they did was a diagnostic seeing a 29F2 code but the car was fine, so they clear the code and it never comes back. That is why my car is back in my hand and tellme to keep my eye on it. So there is no way you will get your HPFP replace.

guess you will need to drive in the slow lane.
next time let them come out and tow it back.
they will get tired of spending $ for the tows
and will most likely replace the pump.

It's not up to the dealer to replace the pump. They do a test and send data to BMW, then another test, transmit data. If you saw the list of tests they need to do it would boggle your mind. They even have to verify fuel pressures on the high and low sides along with pressure drop and again send off to BMW. If there is no code, there is nothing that the dealer can do. All pump replacements are still controlled by corporate, but having the pump code helps.

That is another good point, when you get the 1/2 engine and/or the SEL then pull over and call BMW Roadside. Leave the key in the car with icons lit. They will see it when it arrives at dealer at their expense. They never deny service when it starts costing them money. They don't care if you have to deal with it, that is on your time/dime.

They should've done manual checks on the pressure of the pump. Mine didn't go out completely but the long cranks made evident that the pump is about to be out.

That's funny. I just dropped my 335i off yesterday after having a handful long starts, one MIL and two reduced-power indications this past Saturday. By the time I got to the dealership everything felt perfectly normal again, but they're replacing the HPFP just on the DME log. The SA even mentioned that they're keeping a stock of pumps on hand now so they can turn 335s around faster.

I thought BMW was getting less picky about warranty replacement of HPFPs?

I should get the car back today -- I'm very curious if they replace that pressure sensor too.

UPDATE: My SA just called and to say they replace both the HPFP and the "low-pressure fuel sensor" despite the fact that the engine was running fine at the time. He elaborated "We don't mess around with these things anymore; if the DME shows any codes for fuel issues, we replace the pump and sensor."

(and if anybody's still paying attention to such things, they still haven't mentioned anything about my disconnected exhaust solenoid.)

My dealership replaced the pump in less than a day. They do have pumps in stock for this known issue.

Well that's an easy case, you had the code for the pump then. If there is no code, the process of testing is painfully long and many time shows good. They also test your ethanol/water content in your fuel.

I was on my way to a mountain run/photo shoot and mine failed. I was luckily only about 5 miles and already headed in teh direction of my dealership. I limped on in and arrived about 8am, was back in my car with new HPFP by noon same day.

They can and should be doing this atleast that fast these days.

agreed..its not super hard to diag a bad pump. most of the time its as simple as watching the pressure before cranking and during first start up. the spec for the hpfp is 50bar plus or minus 2 bar. unless the pressure stays low for extended periods of time it doesnt seem to set faults for it. therefore, start the car, watch the pressure while the vehicle is shaking(seen this more than a few times now) and see what the pressure is doing..they arent a TC part so theres no approval needed to replace?

This is consistent with my experience.

are software updates performed after the HPFP replacement? Last thing I would want is upgraded software that shows my inkling towards tunes

When I asked them about the high degree of HPFP failure, my NJ dealership claims that they are "experts" at diagnosing HPFP by now and usually get the car out before afternoon as long as you bring it in my 9AM.

Good point. The tow probably costs them roughly what the dealer charges back BMW for service.

When my pump went it was sudden and fairly dramatic- car wouldn't run anything but really rough upon starting one morning at home so I said F it and just called roadside. They towed it to the dealer some 11 miles away.

Wife gave me a ride to work and the car was done by the afternoon that day.
