Wink Walnut blasting in the Raleigh/Durham/Greensboro area?

Hello, does anyone know a shop that can do walnut blasting for a decent price? And by decent I mean not over $400. Any information would be appreciated. I got a quote for $980 or something like that. I think the walnuts were made of precious metals or something like that. Or perhaps taking off that intake manifold takes 8 hours to complete. Who knows...

I would do it myself but I don't feel like buying the tools for something I will use once every 75k. But perhaps I should if the prices are this ridiculous.

You can get the tools and supplies to do it for less than $150, unless you need a compressor too.

Manifold gaskets ~ $40
Walnut shells ~ $1 a pound (need 15-20 lbs)
Media blaster ~ $50 from harbor freight
Manifold vacuum adapter (optional) ~ $75

Depending on experience, can take 6-8 hrs for the whole job. If I was in the area I'd do it for ya!

How about you take a vacation from your permanent vacation and come and help me with it? haha.

I'll definitely look into getting the equipment then. Might have to wait till it gets warmer though.

I'll be moving in May, but don't know exactly where yet. But, if you were to buy me a plane ticket, I'd gladly come help.

Call Eurobahn in Greensboro and speak with them. They used to do walnut blasting but now use a new chemical system now that is half price of walnut blasting used to be and just as effective according to the tech i spoke to there. Think he said $150-200 to do it

I can say that chemicals won't come close to walnut blasting, especially if the build up is bad... So unless they remove the manifold and let the valves soak in their chemicals and use another manual method to removing the build up, you are wasting your $$$.

Im honestly not too sure about what its called or what they use, just remember the tech saying that they used to walnut blast but used whatever its called now as it was cheaper, faster and just as effective. Think I will call back up there after lunch and find out more. Kinda moronic to speak about something and not know that much about it.

His point is chemical isn't as effective. If your wheels hadn't been washed in 5 years, would you trust a spray on wheel cleaner or brush to do a better job cleaning your wheels?

The person I spoke to at Eurobahn said the chemical clean doesn't do much for cars that have a lot of build up. They didn't mention that they used to do walnut blasting, just that they do not do walnut blasting and that the chemical cleaning doesn't get the hard deposits off.

I had my motor replaced there. The replacement motor had about 50k on it, so I wanted to see if they could walnut blast it. I just skipped it for now since they don't do walnut blasting and they said the chemical clean doesn't do much.

I think Motorsport Connections in Winston does walnut blasting.

I didn't speak to a tech about it though, just the service adviser.

Post back here if you find any where good in the area or any prices.

I'm at about 55k, so I'm probably due for a walnut blasting sometime in the near future.

If you walnut blast to get the hard nasty stuff cleaned up, would it make sense to then do the chemical at some reasonable intervals to keep the hard stuff away?

It may help, but I think the target mileage to have it done again would be 45-50k.

I had mine done at Bimmer Performance Center not too long ago. I think it was under $600 including replacing the oil filter housing gaskets.

Although their labor rates seem a bit high for other jobs. I normally do all my own work, but I am looking for someone to install coil overs for cheap... any suggestions there?

That is very good to know. Nice that there's a place in the triad that does it for a decent price now.
