Because the coils are inserted deep down into the head of the engine, and our motors run rather hot this is a factor as to what kills them (remind same of the nissan RB26 with the same coil design and consequently suffer from the same issue) and these motors also eat plugs
ahk thanks I might do mine when I do my valve cover as it looks like they need to come out anyway.

just curious has anyone actually sent the their oil off for analysis ? there is a possibility that we are throwing away good oil doing 8k intervals... I don't think it's that expensive to get the analysis done either

The oil retains its capability to lubricate for much longer and good synthetic oil doesn't really break down. The problem is that over the period of the oil change interval, the oil is less and less capable of holding soot and other crap. The longer you leave it, the more likely it is to deposit shit throughout the valve cover etc, rather than keep it suspended in the oil.

I'll always change mine at around 8,000km, knowing the oil's ability to lubricate is perfect, but simply to keep the engine clean.

not doubting what your saying as I do 10k oci but I'm sure there are plenty of people running the standard oil change interval and their engine doesn't look like that/still runs fine.... you'd hear about it on here if the standard oci was doing that that's forsure.

Power steering fluid every 2 years seems excessive? The manufacturer of CHF (Pentosin) says it expires after 5 years... :

I agree. I've never heard of changing power steering fluid so soon. I personally think 4-5 years is reasonable and still WAY sooner than anybody I know change power steering fluid in their cars (never).

Why would your comment be deleted? Hills didn't put that bad oil in ? they are fixing the problem...

Waft about O2 sensors ? It is recommended to change them as well around 100k

If you see 2C31, 2C32,2C9F and some other then it is time to look into replacing the bank 1 or bank 2 02 sensors (pre and post cat )

Add alternator to the list! Car just clicked over 150,000kms and the alternator decided to go in peak hour traffic on King Georges Rd last night. People in Sydney will know its one of the main roads and was enough to get me on the radio for causing major delays

Mechanic said they usually go around this time. Hopefully the fix isnt too expensive!

Should be searchable in the dealer computer system by your vin.

They don't actually tell your car what was fixed (excluding basic maintenance indicator resets).

you can still drive for a fair while without an alternator assuming the battery is decently charged and you turn all accessories off....

Oh man I need to fix my oil cooler gasket leak before this happens to me! It leaks all through the alternator!

Problem was that the alternator wasnt providing any power to the battery, so the battery was almost completely dead already. It was just a matter of time before this happened!

Anyone know what a new alternator costs (parts and labour)?

In the US, Rockauto has remanufacturered alternators around 300USD.

Shouldn't be too bad to change, as it's pretty high on the motor, although that has no bearing on what a mechanical will charge once they hear the make.

Yea I got quoted somewhere in the region of $500-700AUD for a new alternator and installation. Seems expensive but rang a few other mechanics in the area and turned out to be reasonable.
