I hear what you saying, but to me it makes no sense to exclude owners from model years whose IDrive factory systems already support CarPlay. I believe it is from MY2016 onwards.
I am with you as I have an 18, really hoping they come through for earlier cars, but my expectation is we will not be included. as noted above for those of us who got 16, 17, 18 cars with CarPlay we had a binary option choice: yes ($300) or no (no CarPlay). It is true we could enable after the fact for the one time fee but it was still the all or nothing choice. The 19/20 cars all come with it free for a year then have to pay... bmw isn't really "making car play free" instead they are "ending the subscription to keep it active". Earlier cars with CarPlay were never part of the subscription model.

I purchased it a day or two before this announcement came out; however, it had not kicked in yet since my current subscription doesn't expire until January 14th.

Talked to my contacts at the dealer and its going to be a slow roll out since its so many cars. He sent me a communication but its internal only, but basically its saying the customers will be notified and that we can do an update to the BMW Assist to get it working again, but it will take some time to show for all cars.

It applies to all MY2019 and MY2020 that included it Free for one year when bought or that was purchased by the customers after delivered.

My old M2 was MY2017 and didn't have the necessary hardware to do Apple CarPlay so some cars won't be eligible because of this.

2019 750i here. As of this morning CP was still showing up as a $300 option. Later in the day I was greeted with the message pictured below. I called BMW and they seemed clueless as to what is going on. Hopefully the Connected Drive software is updating over the air and that is why it isn't accessible.

There are ways around.

Fit the wifi aerial to the head unit and activate carplay (without connected drive, the official unofficial way) and with various hacks/patches on the internet.

I called ConnectedDrive yesterday to get a refund for the 20 year CarPlay subscription I bought in the first two weeks of November for my 2019 M2C. The first person I talked to said she could only refund $220 of my $300. She wouldn't budge on that at all, even though my new subscription hadn't even started yet (Start date = 12/27/19). She even agreed that technically I was still within my first year of my free trial but she was still going to keep $80 of my money. That's bullshit. I took the $220 refund and then immediately called back in and spoke with someone else. This time I took a different approach. I said I wanted to cancel some "prepaid optional services" and I would like a prorated refund. My CarPlay sub didn't start until 12/27, and thus, because the in-service date hadn't arrived yet, that I wanted a full refund. He agreed, put a refund in for the full amount, and I'm just waiting for it to show up on my card.

TLDR; If you bought CarPlay recently and the service period hasn't started yet, tell them you want to cancel prepaid optional services (CarPlay) and you want a prorated refund. This verbiage shows up directly in the Terms/Conditions on the invoice from ConnectedDrive. Don't waste any time talking about how CarPlay is free now.

I think this has something to do with

1- Google has announced wireless android auto,
2- Charging for android auto not feasible since Android owners are way less like lo to pay and very few among BMW owners.
3- BMW wouldn't want to make Android auto free but Car Play paid.

I got the email as well. My carplay expired in Nov 2019 and I didn't get time to renew that fortunately.


" To use Apple CarPlay in your vehicle with your iPhone, be sure to choose "Apple CarPlay" as the connection mode for your mobile device in the Communication settings"

I'm not able to figure out what exactly they want us to do with above statement. I go in general settings on my iPhone phone, select car play and it shows the vehicles that it is supposed to connect to.

The carplay option in connected drive store still shows up for $300.
