How to find out which chip my E92 has

Hi everyone,

First post, so please bear with me

I bought a 2007 E92 335i last year in October. The lady who sold me to was not the original owner but could tell me the car was chip tuned but that is about it. There is a USB cable hidden in the dash which confirms it to me though. Currently, my car is having some quirks while starting or when I pull the cruise control lever: the gas and RPM meters reset to about 8/10th and 3k RPM's. Other than that, the gas meter shows 0% while normally it should show how much gas you actually have (although I can find this out by checking the display). I think this is the chip doing something as I have seen this behavior on moving about tuning kits like the JB4.

I have read up on the JB4 and discovered it is activated by pushing the minus volume and star button simultaneously (if I recall correctly, been a month since I tested) but this does not seem to activate the chip.

The goal is to find out which tuning kit has been installed, but rather without actually having to open up the car. Is there a way to find out which one has been installed and maybe more importantly: how to disable the current features?

For reference, I posted this movie on Youtube: link.

Thank you in advance!

High probability that it is a JB4. Hook up a laptop or cell phone to it and get the software downloaded or purchase JB4 mobile. You will be able to update the firmware and make settings changes. Gauge hijacking can be fun but I would set it to a throttle position threshold and not just have it on all the time like the last owner did. Lastly, this is the N55 section which is found in 2011 (sometimes 2010) and newer 335i's. You will want to post in the N54 section as that pertains to your car.

You can download JB4 software from their website, it's free for windows 10 and then connect it to that USB in your dash that you found. If it's JB4 then you'll be able to use the software with the unit.

With JB4, If your meters are hijacked, gas is used for boost. So if you're pushing boost it tells you how much (neat huh). If it reads Zero then you likely have a miss calibrated gauges regarding the JB4, or you're like me and have a boost leak.

Boost leak is pretty easy to find out, you just floor the car and a fault comes pops up.

I'll also add, you don't actually "chip" your car anymore. i think that was something from the past where you actually solders a new ECU onto your gar's main board, or something crazy like that. It's all just plug in stuff these days.

If you really want to know what you have, you'll have to get into your DME box. Google it, lots of DIY on that task. Takes 20 minutes or less depending one experience to do.

A lot of misinformation with this post.

-The JB4 interface for Windows is free, not just for Windows 10.
-The JB4 does have gauge hijacking but you have more than one option for your fuel gauge so it may be set to something other than boost. If the gauge is reading 0 that doesn't indicate a boost leak. If the JB4 is the reason it is at 0 that just means they have gauge hijacking set to all the time and not a throttle threshold.
-Not all boost leaks throw codes. Even if a code is present you cannot always easily identify where it is.

Just confirming what you said. If you have zero boost your hijacked fuel meter will read Zero when your passed the throttle threshold to activate the hijacking, right?

I do have a boost leak and my car is down on power for sure, and my hijacking only works after I depress the gas a significant amount and the meter does read zero all the time while it's hijacked. after 20 seconds or so it flicks back to gas measure.

It depends on what it is configured for. It could be methanol flow. You can change it through the JB4 app, a laptop, or the wheel controls though. Unless you had a pipe completely disconnected I would expect to see a little bit of boost show if it was set to show boost.
