2011 E92 weird noise under hood
Hello there,
I've got this weird noise that happens when the car is first opened and when shutting the car off and getting out lasts for a few minutes. I made a quick video of it. BMW said it was the coolant pump and it needs to be replaced, however seems a little odd if that kicks on when just opening the door. Thanks for any help or suggestions. |

Anyone have some ideas on this weird noise?
Going to try and take a closer look at it later today if I have time, however hopefully not the first person with this weird noise issue. |

A failing Waterpump sounds more like a heavy deep fan (sort of like an idling UPS truck).
This is more of a buzzing electrical sound. I don't get why it only happens when the door is opened though. Could be battery related or belt and pulley system related.

Had the issue on my E60(n52) that the waterpump was always running. Try unplugging it, and see if it stops or not

Thanks all for the help I'll check and see a few things once back from vacation.
I do need to reconfigure it for the new battery. Maybe its caused by that? |

So had a few minutes to kill today and thought I would see how the car is running. Made the same noise after a bit. Popped open the hood took the water cap off and could see the water being pumped around until the noise stopped.
So looks like this is from the water pump itself. Now I guess the question is it on it's way out or could this be from the new battery installed or some other issue vs the pump going bad? I believe it was replaced around 60k miles ago. I do a lot of 600 mile road trips normally so would rather fix anything that might be breaking sooner than later however not sure if this means it's dying or just running when it shouldn't. |

Just replace it. Those water pumps fail usually with no warning. 50k mile interval for me personally.
