If it continues ill have to try maybe the MAF and MAP cleaning? Other than that i really dont know. Think ill start researching for a good diagnostic tool and good software to go with it.

<Update>
Well im not sure whether it was the oil sump repair, fresh engine oil, BP super fu or because i was driving at 60MPH but damn check this figure

I even floored it a few times (granted it knocked 3MPG off) but was still shocked to see it creep back upto 53ish

How long had you been driving for in that picture? Water temp is low... hence your poor mpg, unless you'd only been driving for a few minutes

Ages mate, that MPG was when I was going to Thorpe Park so it was a good 4 hours worth of driving. I did boot it as well every now and again which instantly knocked off a few MPG but another 4 minutes of steady driving got it back to those figures so it was very consistent. As for the temperature, I was told by the dealer that the car would never get to 90 degree's because of the amount of air hitting the radiator? With town driving it can get over 90 easily

Your dealer is an idiot then.

You should get to 90c within around 10 miles even in winter, the fact it doesn't get to 90c and sit there rock solid shows your thermostat is shagged.

While your 'stat is shagged your car is over fuelling, you need to get it changed.

Thanks very much, so can I just confirm a few things.. my car can and does reach 90+ degrees on occasions and I do see it hit 97 at a standstill sometimes which I believe is when the fan kicks in? But as I say that is "occasions" I'm sure today I was in mid 80's and was driving for quite some time (town driving)

On the motorway, I was driving at 67 Degrees and achieving 52MPG.. it was because of that figure that I've sort of dismissed the thermostat as being an issue as I was quite impressed with that figure?

If my car is supposed to reach 92ish and be solid then there's my answer.. it definitely needs changing as it just doesn't work like that

It should reach 92c pretty quickly and stay there, if it fluctuates you know it is not working properly.

I change mine if it doesn't get passed 87c, if you only get to 80c it is truly knackered.

Hi gIzzE,

It's been a while and just wanted to say I purchased both the EGR and Main thermostat from BMW and I'll be replacing them int he next few days. Was a little busy replacing the crankcase breather and air filter as well as cleaning the MAP sensor.. Very interested to see the figures on a motorway run after

E90 - 2007/57 - N53 325i 3.0 petrol - 25.2mpg average based on mainly town driving, short runs down dual carriageway. Based on around 3k miles as I've not had the car long.

Hi mate,

Apologies, I started a new job not so long back and I've neglected the forums haha.

Okay so new stats and I was amazed at how they performed, so in just a few minutes the temperature can get into the 70's and in a short amount of time the new stats locked in 91 degrees and I mean it was pretty much rock solid 91!

I've had the stats for quite a while now and my temperature sits between 88 - 91 and the temperature from the moment I start my car just increases.. before I could hit 60 - 70 and then the temperature could sit at a certain temperature or even drop a few degrees but good working stats don't behave anything like that it's just a nice linear increase to operating temperature and it keeps it there.

I was told by the dealer who I purchased the car from that on the motorway the temperature would never reach 90ish degrees because of the amount of air that hits the radiator.. that was completely wrong, on the motorway it gets straight up to temperature and sits between 88 - 91.

As for fuel economy I've not noticed any difference, 20 still returns 80ish miles (short journeys + town driving) and my MPG despite resetting every now and again will always settle at around 22MPG. I do believe however there is an underlying issue causing this but I'm still on the lookout.

Hi mate,

Cotswold quoted:

Both thermos will cost you 88.81 Inc Vat,Discount and Delivery to Mainland UK.

Main thermo is 52.66
EGR Thermo 36.16

Installation is pretty simple but took me bloody ages! One of the pipes that connect to the main thermostat has a rubber O-Ring in and that come away and it's fixed into place so I had to purchase another pipe which cost around 52! It's also the two bolts on the EGR cooler that's connected to the exhaust manifold that was really hard to remove.

I literally have a 10 mile round trip commute every day, it doesn't have time to get up to temp before im turning her off! Its always fine on a run though so not worried.

It does about 4/5k a year, I always take my mrs A3 when doing any decent mileage.

I just prefer diesels! Its the Torque mainly but I am considering changing to petrol next time I swap, I cant see that being for a while however!
