What are you trying to update Snoop? If it's the 2006 model in your profile you'll need a completely different process (CCC not CIC).

Thanks for your response, sorry I should have been clear. Yeah the car is a 2006 e92 335d. I fitted Cic a while back, I assumed that by building enet cable described in this thread, I could pull the file from the unit to generate fsc code for maps.

Thanks

In that case you might have to find the ethernet pins on the back of the CIC and connect to them directly because your car may not have ethernet wired out to the OBD plug. Another option is to do the USB-Ethernet adapter from post#1 if that's easier, but you might not have the glovebox usb wires either.

Thanks for your help, after some more research I realised that because the car didnt have Cic from factory, the obd socket wasn't configured for ethernet. The glovebox usb socket is there so I will try the Dlink adapter route and see how I get on.

Thank you for your time

One thing I was thinking, this work only for premium maps (cic professional) or also works for motion maps(cic business)?
Thanks

Am I right in thinking that whilst the process in the OP describes pulling a file over an ethernet OBD adapter, it wouldn't be possible with a wifi one because with the ethernet method the car is the host whereas with wifi the adapter itself would be the host?

When I open fsc.exe it says it has a virus for the CIC version. Does anybody have a clean link to download.

I also have the same antivirus issue on FSC.exe for CIC (not for NBT).
You just need to de-activate your AV if you want the tool to work.

Dlink adapter on glove box usb seems to be working for me, however when I try to login using web browser, its asking for user name and password. Does anyone know what the login details are?

Thanks

Worked like a charm on the first try. Thank you for this excellent step-by-step guide.

Snoop, Did you use WinSCP to force the CIC to become a slave? I believe that method bypasses the password requirement but if not, I don't know of any passwords other than the 2 posted.

Thanks to everyone who has provided instructions, I've now updated my maps and can also contribute that I was able to interrupt the update and have it continue later, with no progress lost.

I was updating via USB and it got to around 55% before I realised that I didn't have the ignition on properly and after a while the car turned off. I gave up on it for a couple of weeks before trying again with a completely different USB stick (albeit with the same files) and when the process started, it picked up where it left off. Now my maps are showing the updated version!

Did you retro a CIC? You would have CCC from factory, which does not require FSC.

Yeah I had the CIC fitted earlier this year. Its currently got the 2014 maps so just thought I would upgrade them to 2016 maps but need the get the VIN out of the CIC as per this thread.

As its a 2006 E90 an Ethernet straight to the ODB isn't going to work so just want to know if the item I linked to is what I should be buying to plug into the USB port in the glove box.

I'm not 100% versed on CIC retros, but I've read a bunch on this subject. Just grabbing the VIN/1B from your CIC is just the first step of many as you may already know. But, I think you will also have to cut a couple of wires behind the CIC so that it does not attempt to verify VIN with the CAS. It's not as simple as getting the file then generating the FSC.

Man15, you need the D-Link DUB-E100 and it must be gray, not black. It is very specific. The BMW Coding site has threads titled "Let's hack the CIC" and "Get 1B file from Exx CIC WITHOUT ICOM" with further detail.
