My steering columns failed about 30+ times with an ELV failure 3 months ago, for several weeks. Try not to hit the steering wheel when you get into your car. After being more careful, the ELV problem went away and never came back. I never went to the dealership - too busy. Do a search though - common problem.

If it happens 10 times or just once, it's just embarrasing!! Especially when you have friends in your car. They're like, "what!! isn't this car pretty new? why isn't it starting?" What da freak.... It's completely unacceptable!

I don't think hitting the steering wheel has anything to do with it. I would usually see the error on the display as soon as I unlocked the car/opened the door with comfort access, before I even got in the seat, or as I was getting in.

Took my car to the dealer, they had to order a sensor and I will be taking it back in a week once the part gets in. Also, they said the new sensor requires a new download of progman, so I don't have to make up excuses to get the new version.

Sensor? what sensor? I had my entire steering wheel column replaced.

The guy told me that the ELV sensor was known to be faulty on the E90s and had to be replaced/upgraded. I'm no mechanic but that's what he said.

Got my car back from the dealer.
The "steering wheel column" was replaced.
Unfortunately, my steering wheel is now messed up!!
I have to turn completely to the left for the car to drive straight.
The only somewhat positive aspect is that the car is starting without any problems so far.

Take it back and have them road test it before they hand it back to you.

If that works then more power to you. Actually, I would rather have them replace a sensor than replace a column.

My E90 just started a couple of days ago with this same issue. Hopefully I can get it into service here in Puerto Rico.

Peace!!!

Update on my story:
They had to order the part for my steering column. The part arrived on Wednesday and I rescheduled the appointment for Monday (earliest they could do it and I tried arguing to no avail to be done immediately). Starting last Friday it started doing it everytime I started the car (yellow warning light failure). Yesterday, when I went home for lunch and got back in my car to come back to work it had the red error symbol this time and the car would not start at all. I tried all sorts of things: turning the wheel, getting out, locking, unlocking to reset the computer, attempting to turn the wheel till it locked which never happened. After that fiasco I called roadside assistance and they towed it to the dealership and it's being worked on now.

When you get in the car and hear the click that's the steering wheel lock. Mine started making much longer sounds like a rachet like sound instead of a quick click. I think that was the lock slowly failing. If this happens to you take it to your dealership to get fixed before you possibly get stranded. I'm expecting a recall soon.

Same problem here 2006 model about 20k miles, taking to the dealer Monday. I have had some luck making sure the steering wheel is locked before exiting the vehicle.

Well, I guess it's my turn to have the steering wheel lock problem. Took it in yesterday. Hope it's a quick fix.

Revisit to this topic.

got my e92 for 1.5 month now. sometimes after i got into the car, the brake felt very stiff and the car would not start. usually i have to take the key out, repeat the sequence about 2x and it would start. Seems like it's happening much more frequently now. No warning light or any locking of the steering wheel.

Any idea guys?? or pretty much a trip to the BMW dealer

I have the same problem, after reading about it here I called my dealer. They already knew it was a common problem and they're going to replace my steering column under warranty (1.5y old) They said it would take less than 2 hours...

I use to have the issue that once the ELV came on I couldn't start the car, but now when I unlock the car the ELV warning appears but I am able to start and drive the car with the error (!) appearing in the center. Did anyone experience this?

I have been having this problem as well Feb 06 build. A few days ago, it took 20 min to finally get the car started. I was about to call a flatbed. I am bringing it in to the dealernext week.

See mine is funny, because even tho it shows the steering wheel is lock it still starts up. Only sometime it will lock up.
