A friend is currently going through what is a familiar story to some people on these boards, with a Range Rover! Rough running, etc, dealership throws parts at it, says it's fixed, he goes to pick it up, it's the same, etc. Dealer has had the vehicle 40 days, so far.
It's the supercharged gas engine so he can't blame DEF.
Perhaps emissions requirements are slightly ahead of all manufacturer's ability to meet there reliably, and with cost efficiency?

I think that OBD2 was a great development in troubleshooting. However, as the time went, it made developers of cars lazy. Now, instead of trying to make something mechanically reliable, they outsource a lot of parts, using common parts that are not always optimal.

And people are as much to blame, because these days ownership has gone down but leasing has gone up. People also prefer fancy doodads and shiny stuff over real things.

Bayer, you do know that the direct injection BMW gas engines also have a lot of issues right.... it's not just diesels. In the USA we can say that we have a harder time with diesels because our mechanics, even the dealership ones know very little about diesels. But how come european mechanics can't troubleshoot??? Or are you going to the dealer- which I honestly feel that the luxury brands are guilty of robbing customers- assuming that costs to fix a luxury car with similar mechanical parts as a normal brand costs more (Audi vs VW, Lexus vs Toyota, Acura vs Honda etc)

For the most part all direct injection engines have some sort of cbu issue... UNLESS it is paired with port injection.. I believe Toyota started doing this because if these issues

If there wasnt this forum, internet, cheap cables and diagnostics and i hadnt cool mechanics who do things for me, i would sort of agree with him=) But since there are.. Even the problems that do come up are somewhat fun to troubleshoot, i just wish i had more of my own equipment and space to do more things myself.

I believe the initial question on here was: Long Term durability.
So here's an update in 2020.
at 75,000 miles and 9 years on the road with 14,000 miles just this last year.
just did brakes & rotors
harmonic balancer last year
new belts last year
mass air flow sensor last year
and that's about it.
Turbo's / Cat. now on BMW warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles
Car has been very, very good to me.

I just hit 191k miles. It's still running strong the only thing I replaced recently was my DEF tank and I purchased a low mileage used one for $200 shipped lol.

160k replaced a number of things, radiator, harmonic balancer three times, did a full delete so all those issue went away, alternator, fan blower…given how hard I drive it the thing the engine and driveline have been a goddamn tank.

I also believe these cars need to be driven daily.

Similar to Chief except now at 170K. Preventatively replaceD glow plugs, GP module, VCG, turbo oil lines, thermostat and fluidamper HB at 130K. Car runs great.

Long Term Reliable

At 145k miles, mine still has all the original, external parts: Belts, hoses, pulleys, balancer - all factory original as of today. Only maintenance ever done was tires, brakes and fluids, with exception of the tuning and related items.

Feels pretty long-term reliable to me, so far.

I'd even suggest it's far more reliable today, than it was when it rolled off the dealer lot for the 1st time in 2011.

We don't do it enough because we kind expect diesels to smell (especially those of us with a full delete) but smoke test your car to make sure the exhaust doesn't have any cracks/leaks…every 10k miles I need an exhaust weld

2010 335d with 109k

I've had the car since 98k.
Overall it's an Amazing machine, I had gotten a Jr Tune 3.1 installed after a mess of emissions backfiring on me.
When I first bought the car I noticed the vacuum Kevlar lines were a bit rough and crusted, didn't think too much of it until I was driving home when I purchased it and a portion of the line popped and I was at half power (engine malfunction light on dash). Decided to replace all of them with silicone lines and since then no issues. But about 2k miles later, I started burning oil. Not like a sliver of oil here and there, no I was driving as if I busted my head gasket. It was a mess, car was down for 4 months while I poked around and around for possible causes. Eventually I found the line that drains the turbo oil back to the pan (via gravity, like just goes down) and was able to replace it. My carbon buildup was relatively low for the car considering the lady whom I purchased it from lived in a city. Maybe she had it walnut blasted prior or so. Nonetheless at roughy 107k miles I bought the Jr 3.1 tune from AARodrigez and I'll tell you, this car sang with its turbos. But not to state the obvious but if you end up with a massive tune you need bigger injectors. As of recently car is down again due to cylinder 6 injector failed. As soon as I replaced it car would crank and crank but not start. To this day I'm looking around and researching possibilities to this error.

At the end of the day we all want to say our machines are amazing if we dumped money into them. And I really do love my 335d but would I do it over again. No way in a million years. But again that's just my experience and I know other may have better positive experiences, and boy I envy you lol. That's just my take. Make your own decisions, just be aware it's still bmw at the end of the day.

2011 335D. Stock, with the JBD Piggy Back. 128,000 miles. Owned since 50,000 miles.

Have replaced all of these over the course of 8 years: SCR tank, DPF, the ECU, all 6 injectors, fuel pressure sensor, high pressure fuel pump, low pressure fuel pump, wheel speed sensors, nox sensors, upstream and downstream o2 sensors, walnut blasted the heads, and some stuff that I'm sure I have forgotten...

I love the car and how it drives but I'm nearing the end of my tolerance for it's maintenance BS. Considering the ABC delete, but worried that it still will give me problems. Any advice?

Yeah you will always have problems with it. It's a vehicle and vehicles always will need upkeep. It really depends on the maintenance you have done also.
