crank shaft seal

Does the M57 engine have a problem of belts getting eaten and breaking the crank shaft seal and getting into the timing belt and oil pan? I have heard of the BMW engines having this problem and needing a seal guard but I can't find anything on the M57 having this problem. A local mechanic wants to charge me an arm and leg to to investigate this after a shredded AC belt.

No. The AC belt belt probably got shredded due to a bad harmonic balancer. Common problem and EASY fix. Make sure you get a clutched alternator pulley while you're at it.

Why pay a mechanic an arm and a leg to investigate if there is damage to the crankshaft seal? Start the engine. If oil leaks, the seal is damaged. If no oil leaks, the seal is good? Cost $0.01 in fuel.

I think that issue is more an N54/55 problem. Never heard of this issue on the M57 though I'm still pretty green with these engines. If you are still wondering if it got eaten and not just shredded some insight might be in the links below...

If you have access to a smoke machine you can apply smoke through the oil filler cap and if your front main seal is compromised you will see smoke coming out around the crank pulley. Ac belt flying off is pretty common on these as the stretchy belt is difficult to install without the right tool and often gets nicked on install leading to premature failure.
